Mail not working after update iOS 18.1.1

After updating iOS to 18.1.1, the mail app is not working. It is totally malfunction and can’t receive nor send email. Start the mail app, it just pops up a white screen. I have tried to offload the app and reinstall it. It’s the same. When I hard reset the phone, it can pop up the mail account list but freezes. How do I fix it?

I had a similar problem. I kept getting a Network Error on my iPhone (which downloaded 18.1.1 recently) and my email accounts--all of them--refused to update with new messages. I thought it might be my university putting a firewall up for some reason, but on my MacBook everything runs fine.

Eventually the email did start syncing again, but it's unreliable. I'm also noticing problems with Instagram and other apps not fully loading content or going very slowly. The new update also drains my battery (it went from 90% to 35% in about 3 hours, most of which was spent in my pocket with the screen off). I feel very frustrated by this update.

*SOLUTION* This issue seems to be limited to accounts that were configured to use the IMAP protocol when they were created on the iPhone. Accounts using POP3 are not affected. Unfortunately there is no way to change an existing mail account from IMAP to POP3 so the only option is to create a new mail account on your iPhone using POP3. Way to go Apple! You become more and more like Microsoft every day!

My iPad was affected and main email account useless, whereas iPhone worked fine. Looking at what you said iPad was imap and iPhone pop. I ended up creating a new account (same details as originally and still an imap set up) and all emails suddenly appeared. Stupid updates - taken me hrs to try and sort this!

Due to this bug/defect by Apple, my battery usage for the Mail app has been between 50% - 55% on a regular basis, forcing me to to have to recharge my phone now ever few hours even though my battery health is at 92%.

Anyone else experiencing that same thing due to this issue?

Apple, please help us!

I have no idea what my token is but my settings indicate my account is using IMAP with a password.

I've mentioned in another post that Apple has upgraded their IMAP security protocols. If you're having a problem accessing your email they expect the service you're receiving the email from to update the protocols at their end so the information can be swapped. This is why Apple has not released a statement about the email problem, which I believe was first reported on September 18th, possibly by beta testers.

I had this problem in the UK, I went on my email provider in safari , got as far as log in , pressed forgotten password , as my phone is on my account I requested a SMS one time pin and changed my password , I then went settings , Apps, Mail, chose the account and account settings deleted the password and entered my new one , 30 seconds later all back , did this on phone and IPad đź‘Ť

Do you not realize that you’re On a thread that is full of people whose email no longer works because of the iOS 18? I am not on a VPN, my inbound and outbound both have Authentication as MD5 Challenge.

Yes, I am aware that a couple of dozen people out of an estimated 500 million who have updated have a problem. And it’s probably a dozen different causes. Each needs troubleshooting. I’m not saying you don’t have a problem, but if it affected even 1% of users (meaning 50 million) the forum would be saturated with posts about it, so it clearly isn’t an iOS 18 problem. Here is a starting point for troubleshooting→If you can’t send or receive emails on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support. And, BTW, I have iOS 18 and all of my 7 email accounts work normally, on both iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, and my wife’s iPhone and iPad.

Some further things to consider:

  • Do you have the latest version of iOS (currently 18.1.1)?
  • Does the problem exist on both cellular data and Wi-Fi, or just on one of them?
  • If it is just Wi-Fi, have you tried a different Wi-Fi network?
  • If it is just on cellular data, do you have a good internet connection via cellular data?
  • Does it happen with one account, or all if you have more than one?
  • Have you Reset Network Settings?
  • Have you made a genius bar appointment to have an Apple technician look at the problem?

Mine wouldn’t work properly in Low power mode, I think it was something to do with this new sorting option added to mail app.

i didn’t actually do anything or make any changes, i would just switch the batter from low power to normal power when i wanted to check for new emails (when my battery was low, when green it would work normally)

i recently updated the iOS to 18.1.2 and recently noticed I was getting emails pushed to my phone when I had low battery.

You should not routinely let your iPhone so low that low power mode comes on, charge if it gets dow to 20%. Frequent trips below 20% will shorten the life of your battery.

All apps are located in Settings/Apps in iOS on the iPhone.

If you can not find the Mail app by using the search function, the app might either be restricted by Screen Time, or it has been deleted.

In that case you can download the app again, using the AppStore on your device:
