Excessive Wind Noise in Right AirPod Only - New Device, Latest Firmware

Dear Apple Support,

I am experiencing an ongoing issue with my recently purchased AirPods 4, specifically concerning excessive wind noise in the right earbud only.

Here is a detailed description of my situation:

Device Information:

  • Purchase Date: Early October 2024 (less than 2 weeks ago)
  • iOS Version: 18.1 (Latest version)
  • AirPods Firmware: Latest version (confirmed at Apple Store)
  • Warranty Status: Under warranty

Issue Timeline:

  • Issue started approximately one week ago, suddenly without any apparent cause
  • Visited Apple Store for diagnosis on October 21, 2024
  • Apple Store technicians found no hardware issues, yet the problem persists

Issue Description:

  • Only the right AirPod unit produces excessive wind/rushing noise
  • The left AirPod functions perfectly normally
  • This issue appeared suddenly, about a week after purchase
  • The problem persists regardless of the environment or volume level

Steps Already Taken:

  1. Visited the Apple Store for diagnostic testing (October 21, 2024)
  2. Had the AirPods checked by Apple technicians who found no hardware issues
  3. Confirmed that both iOS and AirPods firmware are up to date

Given that these are newly purchased AirPods and the issue started so soon after purchase, I believe this might be a defective unit. While the Apple Store found no hardware issues, the problem significantly impacts the usability of the device, especially considering these are premium wireless earbuds.

I would greatly appreciate either a solution to resolve this issue or a replacement unit, as this device is well within its warranty period.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I've had my right AirPod replaced and returned today with its original case and left AirPod. Just tested the AirPods 4 and they both appear to be working correctly now. There is no longer a white noise sound in the right AirPod when I select the Transparency, Adaptive or Noise Cancellation controls.

This indicates that it was a hardware fault with the right AirPod.

Hopefully, this issue won't occur again.

See report below.

I have the same issue. I bought AirPods 4 with ANC at the end of January in France. After a visit to an Apple Store, no hardware problem was found by the technician, and they are not allowed to test the AirPods themselves. I still have this issue even after updating to the latest firmware.

This problem is definitely related to the noise cancellation feature, either the microphone or the software, because when this option is turned off, there is no issue, it takes several minutes for the problem to occur, and sometimes it doesn't happen at all..

It's a shame because, having paid for this feature, I am forced to turn it off

Same here with the right airpod (with the 7b20 firmware). I replicated the same issue on my iPad as well to make sure it comes from the airpod (and it does).

Contacted Apple and they changed me both airpods.

I write this reply 2 days after picking the new ones, and today, again the same sound when activating the ANC but this time, the left airpod is the malfunctioning one.

Am I that unlucky or is this issue that common ?

Btw, if I can add some additional elements I noticed:

Even when I turn off everything (ANC, transparency,…), I noticed that the malfunctioning airpod’s volume fluctuates, sometimes the volume is increased (compared to the other side), sometimes the bass is boosted and I need to use the left/right audio balance in the settings (accessibility) to not get a headache…

Just bought the AirPods 4 ANC in Dec 2024, and it starts having the same problem after a few days.

I’ve replaced 2 times in weeks. When I got the same issue again, they agreed to replace a brand-new AirPods with firmware 7A304. No problem found I the first week when traveling. But I found that after updating to 7B20, the nightmare happens again.

I’m so disappointed. Hopes the next firmware could solve it.

I’m having same issues. My AirPods 4 anc were replaced TWICE at Apple Store, and still I continue to have exact same issue with wind noise. Last time I went Genius Bar they once again said every thing is perfect according to their tests, but this time they can’t replace it and the only option is to file legal claim.

I reached out to the Apple support through the app, they were much more friendly and asked for a couple of days to research. We’ve set up a new call in a couple of days, and I’ll be

in direct contact with the advisor who is handling my problem.

I’m having this same issue, most noticeable if not only in the right airpod, Gen 4, I believe, bought them mid June so fairly new. Noticed the problem almost right away but thought it might be in my head, then thought maybe it was my settings, but nothing seemed to fix it. Noise cancellation seems to be what triggers it, but I think I’ve noticed it in transparent mode as well.

My settings say they are version 7E93 and the case is 74.10.0. It sounds like when you only roll a back window down in a car or like a helicopter. It’s kinda driving me insane. I use noise canceling to help me not get over stimulated in loud places and this constant thumping in my ear is doing the exact opposite.

I tried resetting my airpods (google said to forget them and reconnect? is that resetting? idk) but the problem returned immediately. Could they be defective? Idk what to do here.

Update….discussed with Apple tech support. Tried to troubleshoot problem on another iPhone to try and replicate the issue. Same problem recurred so the AirPods 4 issue is localised to earphone and not iPhone, iOS software or specific apps.

AirPods 4 now returned to Apple to identify root cause of problem. Should hear back in several days from them with diagnosis.
