Excessive Wind Noise in Right AirPod Only - New Device, Latest Firmware

Dear Apple Support,

I am experiencing an ongoing issue with my recently purchased AirPods 4, specifically concerning excessive wind noise in the right earbud only.

Here is a detailed description of my situation:

Device Information:

  • Purchase Date: Early October 2024 (less than 2 weeks ago)
  • iOS Version: 18.1 (Latest version)
  • AirPods Firmware: Latest version (confirmed at Apple Store)
  • Warranty Status: Under warranty

Issue Timeline:

  • Issue started approximately one week ago, suddenly without any apparent cause
  • Visited Apple Store for diagnosis on October 21, 2024
  • Apple Store technicians found no hardware issues, yet the problem persists

Issue Description:

  • Only the right AirPod unit produces excessive wind/rushing noise
  • The left AirPod functions perfectly normally
  • This issue appeared suddenly, about a week after purchase
  • The problem persists regardless of the environment or volume level

Steps Already Taken:

  1. Visited the Apple Store for diagnostic testing (October 21, 2024)
  2. Had the AirPods checked by Apple technicians who found no hardware issues
  3. Confirmed that both iOS and AirPods firmware are up to date

Given that these are newly purchased AirPods and the issue started so soon after purchase, I believe this might be a defective unit. While the Apple Store found no hardware issues, the problem significantly impacts the usability of the device, especially considering these are premium wireless earbuds.

I would greatly appreciate either a solution to resolve this issue or a replacement unit, as this device is well within its warranty period.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I've had my right AirPod replaced and returned today with its original case and left AirPod. Just tested the AirPods 4 and they both appear to be working correctly now. There is no longer a white noise sound in the right AirPod when I select the Transparency, Adaptive or Noise Cancellation controls.

This indicates that it was a hardware fault with the right AirPod.

Hopefully, this issue won't occur again.

See report below.

Update...disappointed with Apple Repair Team response. Contacted Apple Adviser because repair window is now outside of SLA. AirPods sent to Apple Oct 30th, still no update on status and now Nov 13th. Apple Repair would not give any information on the status of the AirPods to the Adviser - no diagnosis of problem, whether it was being fixed, and importantly when my AirPods would be returned to me. Only option given to me by the Repair team, if I wanted my AirPods returned, was to have the AirPods4 returned unrepaired, i.e., cancel the repair altogether - quite a surprising and arrogant way of dealing with a customer. I provided this response as part of my feedback to Apple.

Just waiting to see what happens....

Same problem started today for me out of nowhere. Got my pair as a Christmas gift, so it's been about two weeks. I noticed it on the bus an hour before I posted this when the music I was hearing ended. Didn't give it much thought at first, but then I got into the office and it became clearer due to the lack of excessive noise. It's just the right airpod. The left one works fine. I saw on Reddit that this issue fixed itself for someone. Not sure if I should send it in for repair seeing as some of you have had problems with that. Don't wanna have to wait months to get a new pair...

I’m experiencing the same issue. I bought mine in early December 2024, and the "wind noise" appeared after a few weeks. Apple Store technicians found no hardware issues but agreed to replace them with a brand-new set. A couple of weeks later, I’m now heading back with the new pair having the exact same problem on the other earbud, and I have a feeling the Apple Store technicians will once again find no hardware issues. Very disappointed with the fourth generation.

upd:

The second visit yielded the same results. Apple Store technicians couldn’t detect any issues with their tests. However, if you put the earbuds in your ears (without connecting them to any devices), you can easily hear a loud wind noise in one of the earbuds. I decided to give the 4th generation AirPods one last chance. I have a strong feeling that this is a widespread issue with this generation, and the problem isn’t even with the earbuds themselves but with the tests used by Apple Store technicians, as well as those conducted by the developers when preparing the release.

upd for second chance:

The third replacement pair Apple gave me started making "wind noise" after just three weeks. I'm heading to the Apple Store again for the third time, and this time, I’m demanding a full refund because this AirPods 4 with noise cancellation is complete rubbish. I would not recommend anyone spend money and, more importantly, time dealing with this particular Apple product.

I bought my AirPods Pro (4 ANC) about 3 months ago. Initially, they were working fine, but after a few weeks, I started noticing a windy vibration sound coming from the right AirPod. It’s really uncomfortable and kind of distracting.

I also noticed that Siri has become unresponsive—out of 10 times, it only responds 2 or 3 times, even when I’m in a quiet environment. My AirPods are running version 7E93, and the model number is A3055.

I’ve finally submitted them to the service center for diagnosis, and thankfully, I had purchased AppleCare earlier. If any of you have faced something similar or have any advice or suggestions, please share it would be a huge help for me!
