Why do you say "Apple seems to be quite keen on it"? Don't confuse ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence with ChatGPT Atlas that is a separate browser installed on a Mac by going to the OpenAI website and downloading it manually.

Personally I would not be using ChatGPT Atlas as a browser due to the many security concerns already exposed in that app. It does correctly ask for your permission for data on your device after install as required by Apple to protect your data, but most will just click Allow without realizing the consequences. Do you really want to give it Keychain Access to know your Passwords for other services? What additional information can be gained about you when it can access content from those services? Any page you navigate to is scraped since they are the ones providing you the data and any page request you make is remembered so they know what you are looking for and interested in. Enter a bank account number on one of those websites and you have now given them that information as well.

What do you mean by ChatGPT Atlas was in the update or metaphorically in the Apple "Shopping Cart" where you saw it?

There is one place I know of where a user would have to go and download ChatGPT Atlas and that is at the OpenAI website. It is not in the Mac App Store to download and have not seen where Apple recommended you should use it or include it in any update.

ChatGPT Atlas is NOT what is being used with Apple Intelligence. ChatGPT Atlas is a third party web browser with the security/privacy concerns already identified and ChatGPT is the service that can optionally be used with Apple Intelligence. There are 2 ways to use ChatGPT in Apple Intelligence and they are both optional. One is without a ChatGPT account and the other is with a ChatGPT account. Neither will give ChatGPT information about your Apple Account, but if you choose to open a ChatGPT account then Open AI can log your requests, attachments, and session history. Without the ChatGPT account, your response will be based on the request you made without any prior knowledge of your previous requests. That is completely different than the ChatGPT Atlas you referred to in your post.

Specifically for the ChatGPT extension used for Apple Intelligence if you are concerned about any response related to your privacy/security, then it is recommended to use the Report a Concern option and you can find more information about that here:

No, ChatGPT Atlas is not an Apple product. It is an OpenAI product. There is no forum for it here.

We’ve discussed the distinction here between the basic ChatGPT service and ChatGPT Atlas. The latter is only downloadable from OpenAI’s website.

The ChatGPT service that is integrated with Apple Intelligence can be used without a ChatGPT account. And if you are using Siri, it will always require your permission if it needs to hand off a request to ChatGPT.

Using metaphors can lead to confusion in a technical support forum, especially one full of people from a very wide range of cultures and linguistic backgrounds. I'm from the U.S. and a native English speaker, and even I'm not very sure what you mean by ChatGPT Atlas as being in "Apple's shopping cart." Apple didn't develop Atlas, has no say in Atlas, can't make changes in Atlas. And, to the best of my knowledge, Apple hasn't announced any plans to buy OpenAI.

“Is it an Apple product?” has been answered.

“Is it safe?” is a local decision.

I wouldn't preferably touch OpenAI with a barge pole, to use a colloquialism. OpenAI ChatGPT is a third-party service, and ChatGPT Atlas a third-party app. OpenAI is making an effort to accumulate users and particularly businesses into a Google-like walled garden, much as some of the same folks tried to accumulate users into walled gardens using blockchains.

People can use or not use ChatGPT apps and services as they choose.

Apple too cares for its own walled garden, and part of that involves data security and privacy concerns.

Where the Apple OpenAI partnership goes, we shall learn.

Apple integrated Twitter into iOS a while back (Apple PR), and later removed that, for instance.

ChatGPT is integrated with Apple operating systems as part of Apple Intelligence - it can be found in System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Extensions > ChatGPT. However, it's a partnership between Apple and OpenAI; Apple does not own it.

ChatGPT Atlas is OpenAI's browser, and while they've chosen to offer it exclusively for Mac right now, it's still fully developed by OpenAI, and Apple has no involvement.
