Is there a way to revert photos app after IOS 18

I updated to IOS 18 but the photos app, an app i use frequently, is really driving me insane. Everything is so unorganized and all over the place now. I’m wondering if there’s a way to get it back to how it looked in IOS 17? I just can’t stand how messy it is now and my albums are at the bottom and i prefer having my recent photos in an album of their own. Thinking if I can’t revert I’ll just find a new third party photo app.

Hi Foxfire64!  I too am very unhappy and disappointed with the new Photos app and with Apple in general.  The original was much more intuitive, elegant and actually "usable".  However, I doubt very much if Apple will be going back to the iOS 17 version any time soon, if ever.  There are many other benefits of iOS 18 that warrant upgrading.

I am a retired Photographer and take a lot of photos. I was recently in Europe for 3 months and captured over 12,000 images.  So, I bit the bullet and figured out a way to organize my Photos app to best suit my way of handling my images.

You may want to play around with the customization to find your best layout.  This is what I did.

I opened Customization (at the bottom of the Photos app) and turned off everything but Pinned Collections, Trips and Recent Days. (BTW, Recent Days is basically the same as Recent in iOS 17, except that now you have all days/dates available there.) I'm kinda a minimalist, so I keep it simple. This eliminates most of the clutter.  Before you tap the X to exit this screen, choose the order in which you will mosts likely use these.  Now, tap X to return to your Photos.

Next, you will see the word "Modify” next to Pinned Collections. (By the way, if you haven't discovered this yet, the > next to all the options, is used to enable you to see all of the options in that collection on a new page, if you will.)

Tap Modify and you will be shown the options for adding things to your Pinned Collections.  I choose, in this order, Albums, Favorites, Videos, Screenshots, Recently Saved, Recently Deleted and People & Pets.  Once you’ve selected the things you want in Pinned Collections, you can reorder them anytime by simply returning to Customization.  You can even choose a particular album to be in Pinned Collections (scroll to the bottom).

Know that you will most likely not get your Photos app to look like iOS 17, however, you can get pretty close.  And remember, just because you have customized it now, you can always go back to the customization screen and make adjustments anytime.

There are also many YouTube videos that discus this customization process.  Watch a few to see if they may also assist you in finding a way to get what you want from the new iOS 18 Photos app.

I do realize that this may only seem like a workaround, however, like I said earlier, Apple will most likely NOT go back to the previous version.  If you have hope that they might,  I encourage you to write to Apple at www.apple.com/feedback and voice your opinion.  Writing to them is the only way they will ever see our frustrations with some of the awful “improvements” they make us endure.

A few days ago, because of the constant notifications to update my ipad software to ios 18.1 I made the

mistake to install the update. Now my photos are a mess! I do not want music playing when I look at a

family photo!! Can I safely revert to ios 17 ?

Why change the photo app that was fine to begin with?

From now on I will ignore the constant notifications to update my ipad software! Why someone would think that adding 'music' to people's private photos is beyond belief!

Music is only added to slide shows. I'm also note sure I understand how this is a privacy issue.

I honestly don't care if you never update again. But privacy is important to you, it seems like security updates would be too.

Don't know what you mean by your photo albums not being on the new format. If it is about the sort order or filtering the albums, you can get help here:

You can expect changes every year with iOS updates and may be surprised to learn that the same thing happens on Android as they are now up to Android 16. In either case, it makes to difference to us which platform you choose and would strongly recommend to use the one that best meets your needs with protections for privacy and security.

I still haven't upgraded to IOS 18. Every time I get close to doing that when reading reassuring comments, I read a new comment where someone loses their current albums from IOS 17. So, I continue to wait, hoping that Apple will fix the issue. I have watched many training videos so I understand all of the customization possible in the new format, but want to ensure that my 300 plus albums transfer over in their current state.

I use my photos for work and ease of access to my photos is very important to me. The new photo upgrade is so disorganized and confusing. This is the first time that I am seriously considering changing phone brand. I have tried everything but failed to revert back to the old setup. There’s nothing good about this new setup. I couldn’t even find my recent pictures

You are incorrect. Until the new update once you’d move a photo out of the camera roll it was no longer there. You had to go to your synced photo folder to access it as they no longer existed on the camera roll. Ive been doing it for 15 years until this recent update. Now when I move them, they remain on the main screen.

quick edit. You maybe referring to doing them through the app. I am not. I use the actual computer to move the photos into folder that are then synced through iTunes

Yes, I was referring to using the Photos app on the iPhone as you mentioned your 3G. Sorry, I no longer sync photos from my Mac to the Phone, so I am unfamiliar with any changes in what you are seeing. I do know that the Camera Roll was removed from the Photos app in iOS 13 and the name was changed to Recently Saved that altered its functionality. What would be considered as the Camera Roll is in the Camera app by tapping the preview in the lower left. But again, I am not familiar with how that changed the way syncing is done from your computer.

As always, let Apple know how you feel and how the changes has affected your workflow.

I’ve not yet updated, I’m still on a much later version, 16 I think, my daughter has updated and is screaming on how it’s all changed, especially her photos, I don’t know why you are not just given the option to choose what it is you will allow to be changed, or atleast changed back if you don’t like it, I’m not updating, one or two apps are no longer working, but I don’t care, so I’ve deleted them, or thrown them into another spare folder, I avoid apple updates as much as I can, but I’m swaying towards android.

It is your choice what you do. Nobody here cares what platform you use and as always it is strongly recommended to get the one that best meets your needs. I suggest you spend some time over n the Android Support site, as it is not unusual to regularly see a post where a disgruntled user does not like something and says they are switching to the iPhone. For some reason that seams like the go to response. In any case they also have yearly updates and here are what those users say about it.

That’s odd, I guess I’ve been doing it wrong. I’ve always had to open the app I’m editing in (say, like PSE) and pick the photo from there. I’ve never been able to open a photo in the Photos App and then export it to whatever editing app I’m using. And all photos are saved to the Photos app regardless of what editing app you use.

I’ve always felt this feature is half baked. Not all the editing apps show up in that menu. The ones I want use aren’t there.

Only the apps that include the Photo Editing Extension will show up in that list. That is something the app developer must do when they create the app.

While this document will not help you, it does describe the steps that developers take so their app is able to be edited right from the Photos app. It is the developers choice, but it is also true some developers would prefer you use their app instead.

I have "Update Anxiety". I am avoiding ios 18, but know that late some night I will make a mistake as it pesters me repeatedly and it will update, it always happens. The photos thing is so ominous that I just do not want to deal with that right now. Most updates require several days of configuring afterwards just to get back to normal. My life is fine right now, I need Nothing at all in ios18, NOTHING. But I suffer through the updates because the world moves on and we all have to move with it. After reading the comments here I am thinking that long term I need to go back to a separate camera and keep my phot life off of my phone. Like I used to. And not having photos in the cloud is probably a good thing.

But I do have a question, it is February 2025 and ios18.3 is being offered, is the photo app behaving itself yet ? Did some of the horror get rectified. Do those who posted here about the difficulties finally found a way to move through to some kind of comfort with this change ?

I am absolutely stunned by the number of web articles devoted to the photo update. So much drama.

Where are the benefits to the users ? As for every single "new" thing ios18 does, do not care.

Good Luck all.

To Gar Benedick, it means very much to me that you would take the time to write so much in response to my comment. You have given me so much and I thank you. For anyone else following this, I agree that using a test device for updates is a good idea, I am fortunate enough to have a new ipad and a spare phone that can be used to move onto updates and experiment with features before committing my primary phone to the changes. Please note that some changes are not in the ipad after an update, so you might not see them. Anyway, your advice is very good advice. Just this morning I copied and pasted one of your commentaries on this topic, so your name stuck out, I was already listening to you. One area I will touch on is this: I have much less time left, meaning I am way closer to the end than the beginning. I made a conscious decision to spend it living a real life, less screen time, zero social media. There are better things to do when you are old, and able, than to fiddle with changes to a device just so I can feel comfortable again. I am not against change either, I spent my whole life creating and introducing and training - for change. But one trend I notice is a need for developers to create change for the sake of change, to keep a job. Believe me I was surprised that software I wrote more than 20 years ago was still being used, as it was written, that usually does not happen. But when I see frequent updates with no real value other than making an update... I have to wonder what is the point. I often wonder if this is the last update I will ever have to endure. In some ways I am not looking forward to ios20.3.2 , but if I live to see it, it means I made it to a nice old age. Good Luck to you Gar, and thank you. I will update, I will adapt. I will persevere and remember what you said.
