Is there a way to revert photos app after IOS 18

I updated to IOS 18 but the photos app, an app i use frequently, is really driving me insane. Everything is so unorganized and all over the place now. I’m wondering if there’s a way to get it back to how it looked in IOS 17? I just can’t stand how messy it is now and my albums are at the bottom and i prefer having my recent photos in an album of their own. Thinking if I can’t revert I’ll just find a new third party photo app.

Hi Foxfire64!  I too am very unhappy and disappointed with the new Photos app and with Apple in general.  The original was much more intuitive, elegant and actually "usable".  However, I doubt very much if Apple will be going back to the iOS 17 version any time soon, if ever.  There are many other benefits of iOS 18 that warrant upgrading.

I am a retired Photographer and take a lot of photos. I was recently in Europe for 3 months and captured over 12,000 images.  So, I bit the bullet and figured out a way to organize my Photos app to best suit my way of handling my images.

You may want to play around with the customization to find your best layout.  This is what I did.

I opened Customization (at the bottom of the Photos app) and turned off everything but Pinned Collections, Trips and Recent Days. (BTW, Recent Days is basically the same as Recent in iOS 17, except that now you have all days/dates available there.) I'm kinda a minimalist, so I keep it simple. This eliminates most of the clutter.  Before you tap the X to exit this screen, choose the order in which you will mosts likely use these.  Now, tap X to return to your Photos.

Next, you will see the word "Modify” next to Pinned Collections. (By the way, if you haven't discovered this yet, the > next to all the options, is used to enable you to see all of the options in that collection on a new page, if you will.)

Tap Modify and you will be shown the options for adding things to your Pinned Collections.  I choose, in this order, Albums, Favorites, Videos, Screenshots, Recently Saved, Recently Deleted and People & Pets.  Once you’ve selected the things you want in Pinned Collections, you can reorder them anytime by simply returning to Customization.  You can even choose a particular album to be in Pinned Collections (scroll to the bottom).

Know that you will most likely not get your Photos app to look like iOS 17, however, you can get pretty close.  And remember, just because you have customized it now, you can always go back to the customization screen and make adjustments anytime.

There are also many YouTube videos that discus this customization process.  Watch a few to see if they may also assist you in finding a way to get what you want from the new iOS 18 Photos app.

I do realize that this may only seem like a workaround, however, like I said earlier, Apple will most likely NOT go back to the previous version.  If you have hope that they might,  I encourage you to write to Apple at www.apple.com/feedback and voice your opinion.  Writing to them is the only way they will ever see our frustrations with some of the awful “improvements” they make us endure.

Apple, I hate what you have done to photos and video on the iPhone. Why do you keep messing with it? Leave it alone it is now extremely frustrating and difficult to use. I’m about to leave Apple products.

Sorry, but you are not speaking to Apple here. This site is just made up of other users and you will need to send feedback if you are looking to address Apple. As for threats to leave Apple products, it really makes no difference to us. I would suggest to use whatever device best meets your needs.

Okay new question: Is there a way to close or delete this thread? I’m not interested in all the replies of just people’s opinion on the update I just wanted a simple answer nothing else but I’m tired of getting endless emails about someone replying to the thread.

No, you cannot delete or close the thread. Only the Hosts can do that.

In theory, you can unsubscribe by tapping on the blue bell icon at the bottom left of your original post. Sometimes it works if you do it once. Sometimes it works after you try a few times. Sometimes it doesn't work. This is a known forum issue.

Who would be the “host” if not the original poster? Apple?

The Hosts are the Apple employees who run the forums.

I just wanna know where to navigate to stop getting notified about this thread specifically, there’s nothing of valuable substance being added to it past the first maybe 5 replies.

I explained how to do that and also why it might not work.

I already had that off since maybe the 2nd or 3rd day this thread was up and I’m still getting notifications about it 🥲 is there any way to contact someone to get it closed or at least have someone go in and make it so I don’t have to get notified about it anymore since the bell icon isn’t working properly?

I have analyzed this issue extensively. To unsubscribe from a thread:

  • Click the blue bell near the top of the page
  • Redraw the page, using the button in your browser (It’s to the right of the URL in Safari, near the top right edge in Firefox; it looks like a partial circle with an arrow)
  • If the button is blue again, repeat the process until the bell remains clear

You will need to do this once for every post you made in the thread. For example, if you made 3 posts, you will have to repeat this 3 times.

This is a forum bug that first appeared around 5 years ago, was fixed, and has recently returned.

Zuraczurx:

I use Photos in the same manner as you. 99% of my photos are taken with a DLSR and are manually transferred from the Photos library on my Mac to the Photos App on my iPhone in the form of subject specific albums. (I do not use iCloud).

There has to be a way to segregate snapshots taken on the iPhone from the thousands of photos contained in the transferred albums.

Have you found anyway to restore the equivalent of Camera Roll and separate the images? If this cannot be done then the Photos App has been rendered completely useless.

I have used the customization window to deselect every feature except "From My Mac" However, I cannot figure out how to eliminate the mosaic located immediately above my albums that mixes the thousands of photos in my albums with the snapshots taken on my iPhone.

I absolutely HATE this new photo update on the iPhone. It is messy and unorganized and difficult to find photos and references to materials I need.

On top of that, I don’t think whoever designed this thought about the users input. I switched my grandparents to Apple from Samsung/Apple because it was simpler for them. With this new update, they have to learn everything again with access the simplest things.

I didn’t want to do the update either and my last phone speaker crapped out so I was forced to get a new phone and automatically put the new update on it. I’m very disappointed. I feel like the photos are a mess and I agree I used to use recent all the time And everything is squashed into the screen rather than having larger photo images to choose from. I don’t like it at all.

I am beyond irritated with trying to watch or edit a video. The video begins playing with no sound. You have to click on it to make the sound button appear but then it minimizes the video. Then you have to tap it to make it full size again- only now the video is 10 seconds in and you’ve missed the first part trying to navigate making it work. It’s the worst. Whoever thought this was a good idea has not tried to use it.
