Is there a way to revert photos app after IOS 18

I updated to IOS 18 but the photos app, an app i use frequently, is really driving me insane. Everything is so unorganized and all over the place now. I’m wondering if there’s a way to get it back to how it looked in IOS 17? I just can’t stand how messy it is now and my albums are at the bottom and i prefer having my recent photos in an album of their own. Thinking if I can’t revert I’ll just find a new third party photo app.

Hi Foxfire64!  I too am very unhappy and disappointed with the new Photos app and with Apple in general.  The original was much more intuitive, elegant and actually "usable".  However, I doubt very much if Apple will be going back to the iOS 17 version any time soon, if ever.  There are many other benefits of iOS 18 that warrant upgrading.

I am a retired Photographer and take a lot of photos. I was recently in Europe for 3 months and captured over 12,000 images.  So, I bit the bullet and figured out a way to organize my Photos app to best suit my way of handling my images.

You may want to play around with the customization to find your best layout.  This is what I did.

I opened Customization (at the bottom of the Photos app) and turned off everything but Pinned Collections, Trips and Recent Days. (BTW, Recent Days is basically the same as Recent in iOS 17, except that now you have all days/dates available there.) I'm kinda a minimalist, so I keep it simple. This eliminates most of the clutter.  Before you tap the X to exit this screen, choose the order in which you will mosts likely use these.  Now, tap X to return to your Photos.

Next, you will see the word "Modify” next to Pinned Collections. (By the way, if you haven't discovered this yet, the > next to all the options, is used to enable you to see all of the options in that collection on a new page, if you will.)

Tap Modify and you will be shown the options for adding things to your Pinned Collections.  I choose, in this order, Albums, Favorites, Videos, Screenshots, Recently Saved, Recently Deleted and People & Pets.  Once you’ve selected the things you want in Pinned Collections, you can reorder them anytime by simply returning to Customization.  You can even choose a particular album to be in Pinned Collections (scroll to the bottom).

Know that you will most likely not get your Photos app to look like iOS 17, however, you can get pretty close.  And remember, just because you have customized it now, you can always go back to the customization screen and make adjustments anytime.

There are also many YouTube videos that discus this customization process.  Watch a few to see if they may also assist you in finding a way to get what you want from the new iOS 18 Photos app.

I do realize that this may only seem like a workaround, however, like I said earlier, Apple will most likely NOT go back to the previous version.  If you have hope that they might,  I encourage you to write to Apple at www.apple.com/feedback and voice your opinion.  Writing to them is the only way they will ever see our frustrations with some of the awful “improvements” they make us endure.

That is not correct, the photo app order and display completely redesigned and not in a good way,

the customization doesn’t make it any better and still a mess, features that worked before like favorites just removed.

why do I need to go watch hours of vids on how to make it work again?

its not easier than just switching to a phone that already have a better design of the app.

With all the complaints online , If you guys still think this was a good update to this app, it’s ok your call..

That's a matter of opinion. Personally, I like it a lot better because I was able to remove from the screen a lot of things I never used.

I don't know. It took me about 10 minutes to figure out the basics.

There was a flurry of complaints when it first launched. But, most people have figured it out by now and are apparently not holding grudges. Also, it's far more likely that people who don't like something will make the most noise. People who do like it or don't really care are off living their lives. Almost no one joins a forum to say, "Hey, great update. I really like it."

Why do you think anyone here cares what products you buy? I think people should buy whatever best meets their needs.

You can always tell Apple what you think here:

I work was a UX-designer and this update is like a really bad nightmare and confirms the total lack of user-centered approach/ methodologies at Apple. When opening an album to look for a specific video/photo, I’m met by a massive preview of random videos/photos looping non-stop on autoplay. My initial reaction is that I must stop the video. (Videoes I need to watch, I am able to start my self.) However!!

Clicking the video (in order to reveal the stop-button/control panel + turn off the video), turns out to be a shortcut to full screen view - of the auto started and very random looping videos - the screening I never asked for + never wanted!!

Will now read through comments, hopefully you guys found a way to revert to the old photo gallery app.

Just the absolute worst—literally no thought behind what they did with photos. And on top of the disorganized mess, the freaking thing no longer works.

Last night I was doing a social media rollout for an upcoming event. I’d downloaded all four images in my phone photo library, and happily went about rolling them out.

This morning they are no longer in my library-nor are they appearing in my library when I re-download them!!!

It’s beginning to grow on me. Or maybe I just adapted to it. My biggest gripe is the giant image in the background of the folders. It’s distracting and frankly serves no purpose. I’ve resorted to dropping a black image into every folder so the background is black. But I lose the thumbnails in the sidebar on my iPad.

I'm one of the lucky people who adapts to this sort of change fairly easily. Just lucky. But do NOT rearrange my kitchen or I will melt down!

Seriously, glad to hear you're finding ways of making it work for you.

You are fantastic! Recently Saved really helps me with finding a substitute for the old Camera Roll. An iPhone user sent me a couple of photos that I saved in Photos. A while later I looked in Photos and I couldn’t find them. Turns out they were taken I March 2024! But now using your suggestion of Recently Saved they are right there as new additions instead of being 12 months in the past!
