The Notes app has become almost unusable in iOS 18

Hello!

iPhone 13 Pro Max (1TB)

iOS 18 Upgrade

Major issues with the NOTES app

When I open the NOTES app, it’s very difficult to access the notes within the app.

It freezes, lags, and worst of all, at some point, the NOTES app crashes.

The phone heats up a lot.

The battery drains excessively (about 25% in less than an hour).

I have over 6,000 notes, but I don’t think that’s the issue. I have enough space on the phone.

Same, iPhone 14 Pro, 16 Pro arrives tomorrow. Notes app went from being great to a slideshow. Kills my battery life and now is totally unusable. Apple shouldn't be shipping with a regression this large in a core app that's been in the phone since the beginning. Kind of surprised more people aren't experiencing this. I too have a lot of notes, about 3,500 but it worked great on iOS 17 earlier this week. I also have a few shared notes, so maybe something there? Not sure, but they need to fix it fast.

I wish I’d known about this issue with Notes before updating…I would have waited. I use Notes multiple times each day and now I can open Notes but it is frozen. While I can still access Notes on my MacBook Pro and my iPad, I don’t carry them around with me so not terribly useful.

Hoping for an update to resolve this issue soon.

After updating to iPadOS 18, I’m experiencing issues with Apple Notes. While writing, characters stop appearing, but if I lift the Apple Pencil from the display and then touch it again, all the “invisible” characters that previously didn’t show up suddenly appear at once. Any other apps or notes from third-party developers work correctly.

Hi! Yes, for me it has been resolved.

I did get a new device (16 Pro) but I synced over all my data from my 14 Pro's backup that was originally experiencing the issue and everything has been fine.

My hunch is maybe since the 18.0.1 update didn't work for you, next try an iOS software restore — but you should be able to restore from your backup!

If that still doesn't work then you'd either need to do another restore and setup as a new device 🥴 or wait and hope 18.1 later this month fixes it.

But when the issue was happening to me Notes was entirely unusable so if it's equally unbearable for you I'd suggest giving the restore(s) a shot first. Good luck!

Same. Unusable. This has been a problem going back several iOS versions. I read good reviews and switched from Evernote to save money and to have notes native to my OS.

To make matters worse, there is no export function except for PDF, so I’m stuck with this horrible product.

Why is Apple not addressing this?????? Note taking is an essential function.

So ticked off and frustrated.

I had 6000 (six thousand) notes. I had. Now, I don’t have them anymore. Until iOS 17, everything worked fine. The problem appeared the moment I updated to iOS 18. The Notes app stuttered, froze, and basically became unusable. I downgraded my iCloud plan (because, anyway, the 50 GB didn’t help me at all, it would have been the same even if I upgraded to 200 GB, and 2 TB is too much, but especially, too expensive). Anyway, the maneuver cost me over two years of work. They say that if something works well, you should leave it as it is. What Apple did to make the Notes app stop working, I don't know. iOS 18 was an OFFICIAL BETA. It worked with many problems. All the 'innovations' brought by iOS 18 (up until 10.10.2024) are just simple bells and whistles without importance.

It's a shame!

All my work of over two years went down the drain.

Apple ruined what worked well.

I’m having this issue as well. I contacted support about it and they referred me to a specialist who screen shared both my phone and laptop. They were both very patient and had me check a few settings and the conclusion was that it was a syncing issue. Now the same problem has started all over again after just a few days. I had about 12K notes and I’ve trashed about a quarter of those. I’ve got plenty of storage and the issue didn’t start until I updated to 18.

Major issues with the NOTES app

in addition to other comments posted I am not having any success sending a scanned document via email as a pdf.

When sending a scanned Note document via email from iPhone NO ATTACHMENT is received.

when sending a Note from my MacBook Pro that has been exported to a PDF the PDF opens as a blank gray box.

I have used the Notes scanning feature for years to save important documents as a PDF.

This needs to be FIXED ASAP!

I lost over 6000 notes because of this update. I’ve come to the conclusion that Apple doesn’t care about certain things. When building a building or anything else, if you come across an archaeological site, you stop the work, and until the conservation process is complete, you don’t move forward with the bulldozer. That’s exactly what Apple did: bulldozed over people’s work.

In conclusion, I believe it’s better to adopt alternative solutions, including the classic method: keeping notes in TXT files.
