In that Finder Window that you just provided a screenshot, press cmd+J to open the Show View Options panel. Is the Show icon preview selected, and if not, by selecting it do the generic icons change to their respective image?

When those PNGs were produced, was there an option to include an icon image that may have been overlooked?

Yes, the option to "show icon preview" is selected on my Mac. This affects - some, not all - image files, including png, jpgs and raw formats and I'm not using any third party viewers. I reported the issue to Product Feedback - Apple

I’ve read most of these posts. Everyone is talking about the recent upgrade/update to Sequoia. My 2015 MacBook is running on Monterey 12.7.6, but in the last week or so, the thumbnail images disappeared. So, what would cause that when I haven’t had any updates? I’ve tried JPG, TIF, PSD, nothing works.

Likely a different problem versus Sequoia, so maybe best for you to open a new posting in the Monterey Discussion area. It could be a shared cause but seems unlikely.

Unfortunately not. I am updated and it's not fixed. In fact, I have new images that are solid white thumbnails now. If I click on the image and have the preview sidebar open it shows the image in the sidebar, but not the thumb.

Most of them with issues (if not all of them) are on the local HDD and not on external drives. So it's definitely a localized system issue.

Not a solution. Images are showing previews and thumbnails while others do not. For instance, I take 10 pictures on my iPhone and put them on the Mac.... out of those 10 images 5 or more will not have thumbnails visible. The photos have no difference in settings from the phone, etc. My issue is not just with .PNG files, but .HEIC, .JPG, and all of them are from my phone.

It only is an issue when the images are on my actual Mac hard drive. If I move the images that do not show a thumbnail to an external drive, the thumbnail works just fine. If I move them back to the system's internal drive, the thumbnails don't work again for those same images.

If I open them in Preview or any other software and save them or use the 'convert image' option in Finder, the thumbnails work, but of course the metadata is no longer 100% valid since it's a new file creation (from the system and not the original source).

I’m having the same problem of appearing / disappearing icon previews for a folder of jpgs all taken on my iPhone. All of the files were saved to iCloud Drive via Share > Files from the iOS Photos app. I’m viewing them on my computer in the same iCloud folder where I saved them originally.

The image preview shows in Finder > Preview and Get Info regardless of whether it shows in the main Finder window. All of the image previews show when View Options > Icon Size is set to the smallest size and the biggest size. To experiment, I started at the smallest size (16x16) and increased the size by 1-2 increments. Between each increment change, I scrolled the full length of folder to verify if there were any missing previews. All previews showed up to 80x80. At 84x84, the original behavior started: previews show and disappear on different icons at seemingly random intervals.

The weirdest part IMO is that the behavior occurs in a 3rd party Finder supplement app called Path Finder.

There is no pattern that I can discern in terms of original file name vs. renamed files nor .jpg vs. .JPG vs. .jpeg.

In addition to the icon preview, Item Info also displays inconsistently and not on the same icons as the preview (see below).

Now that's strange. Rotated 4 times and no luck. Then rotated once again and they all appeared but were upside down so rotated again and all the thumbnails that were originally blank became blank again. Now that tells me definitively that there is a bug in the code associated with the flag associated with one of the rotation positions. Rotate it and the flag is Ok, rotate it back and the old flag is still there. This is an Apple program bug!!

Anyone know the process for inveigling (by flattery) Apple to fix the bug?

Thanks but this does not work for me. RAW images shot with my Canon R1 have the generic "CR3" placeholder icon. I tried doing a "Get Info" on one of the photos but where the image should be is just a black box. Fortunately I can see the images in Adobe Lightroom Classic (my primary photo editing program) and Photoshop.

Hopefully I will be able to see video that I shot with this camera this past weekend. I need to edit it in iMovie.

I'm running Sequoia 15.3.2 on a MBP M4 Max 128Gb and the problem still persists. Tried all the supposed solutions with no success. 'Show icon preview' is ticked as you can see in the screenshot. Reported the issue to Apple but no response... and still no solution. Pretty annoying (understatement) when one has forked out £7k for a laptop to find that you cannot view thousands of photos because the thumbnails are not displaying!
