Can't drag the cursor up in text messages on new iphone 15 Pro iOS 17

I switched from my iphone 13 pro with iOS 17 (no problems with the upgrade) and now I've lost a bunch of features. This post is about typing a long enough text message so the beginning is hidden at the top. I can scroll to read the whole thing but I can't edit at the beginning. I push/hold on the message (or spacebar) and drag to the cursor to where I want it. I let go and it pops back down to a different part of the message. I don't need it often but it's something that Apple should be aware of if it's happening to others.

I updated my phone to iOS 17.1 yesterday (10/31/2023). It seems to have resolved both the drag and drop cursor issue and my stickers feature disappearing (different discussion). The Stickers would stop about a day after getting them to work again so I'm hoping they're good now. I was able to drag my cursor around in a long text as a test and that was just like it used to be (yay!), however, I haven't had to do that so it may have been fixed before 17.1. I hope the update works for all of you!

I just wrote a long text and nearly cried. When I scroll to a place to edit the whole thing suddenly flips to another place. Trying to control the cursor is useless. If I put the cursor somewhere it immediately pops back to the last place it was — or some totally random place. I could scream. The caps key goes off before I even have a chance to type. It’s basically doing the same thing as the cursor. Totally uncontrollable. And this back arrow editing thing is insane. Almost everything it suggests is not a real word so just trying not to touch it. I’m so regretting iOS 17.

I have the same issue - can’t edit longer texts because can’t place cursor in higher sections of text.

I’ve been up to date with 17.1.1 pretty much since it came out and the issue persists. None of the fudges recommended in this post work. Including the most recent of dragging up from the space bar - keyboard goes grey yes, but cursor disappears and also still can’t scroll up. I booked an appointment with a genius and he tried this and failed. He tried various other things too, to no avail.

In addition to the scrolling up / editing issue in the messages app, the curser doesn’t function as it did in previous iOS in other ways as well. It is much poorer. For example when I tap to a position I wish to edit, sometimes it goes to where I want to place it, while very often it selects a word or even letter, and for the life of me I can’t just get it to flash in the spot I want without it selecting something. Whereas this wasn’t a problem in previous iOS. (It’s happening now while I write this, not in messages.) Then I tap in a different place and it does as one wishes and is the normal flashing cursor again. But it’s not where one wants it. I can’t see any pattern to it. It is infuriating for sure.

Everything is taking longer.

Getting the user interface right / having a curser working properly is obviously an absolute fundamental.

This is really poor and it’s been happening for way too long now.

I'm on a 6SE and have the same problem. After dictating a long message just to discover I misspelled a word in the first sentence. When I try to scroll to the top to edit it, it sends me back down to the bottom. So frustrating! The trick with going to the bottom and long pressing the space bar works but what a pain in the ***. Do these high payed employees at apple have nothing better to do but to screw with us? Dagnabit!

I’ve been having the same infuriatingly issue as well PLUS when I try to edit in previously written text - either to add, delete, correct, cut/copy/paste - it will highlight the word following wherever I place the cursor in gray and a bubble with a suggested word and a u-turn like arrow will pop up. It does it in emails too and … FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! It’s even doing it while I’m writing this reply! (below is a photo of what happened) I tried resetting keyboard dictionary and phone reboot that was suggested in a previous reply without any luck. Has anyone figured out a fix? If memory serves me, this started with the initial iOS 17 update in SEP.2023. There have been nine (9) updates since then, none of which have made it any easier to write on devices. If Apple believes this to be a “feature” versus an “issue” then they are on crack.

Experiencing this too. Driving me nuts. Makes editing message impossible.

Took me forever to find this thread because there so many similarly worded issues in threads from the past - but this is new. Never experienced this before.

I too. Just upgraded to iPhone 15 from a 12. Exact same issue as poster described.

tried all resets and shutting off accessibility zoom and shrinking text size etc etc etc.

I have done the recommended fixes in this forum to no avail. This morning, I installed the iOS 17.1.1 update and was only able to get it to work once, and only after repeated tries. Will submit a fix request to Apple suggested above. I hope they get this fixed soon. I have used notes to created text for a message but this should not be necessary. iMessage worked fine until iOS 17 update. It is a royal pain!
