Can't drag the cursor up in text messages on new iphone 15 Pro iOS 17

I switched from my iphone 13 pro with iOS 17 (no problems with the upgrade) and now I've lost a bunch of features. This post is about typing a long enough text message so the beginning is hidden at the top. I can scroll to read the whole thing but I can't edit at the beginning. I push/hold on the message (or spacebar) and drag to the cursor to where I want it. I let go and it pops back down to a different part of the message. I don't need it often but it's something that Apple should be aware of if it's happening to others.

I updated my phone to iOS 17.1 yesterday (10/31/2023). It seems to have resolved both the drag and drop cursor issue and my stickers feature disappearing (different discussion). The Stickers would stop about a day after getting them to work again so I'm hoping they're good now. I was able to drag my cursor around in a long text as a test and that was just like it used to be (yay!), however, I haven't had to do that so it may have been fixed before 17.1. I hope the update works for all of you!

This has been a problem since iOS 17 was introduced, still there with 17.1.1. I can get it to work with much effort, pressing and holding to try to move the cursor, trying multiple times, and eventually, I can get it to allow me to get to the top of a long message to edit. It's frustrating, for sure, and you would think it'd be fixed by now. Come on Apple, at least let us know you're aware of the issue. And don't tell me the fix is to keep message to 140 characters or less. ;-)

Nope re. suggestion of turning phone landscape to edit text - in that it’s very hit and miss. (While also of course it’s most suboptimal to have to start changing the direction of phone just to edit a text message.) If you try and tap the cursor where you want on portrait and then turn phone landscape without touching it again it can sometimes allow you to edit but as soon as you scroll down to read what you’re about to send (in landscape) and scroll back up to edit some more, you have the same problem as before, it won’t let you.

Additional feedback: the behaviour is different depending on whether you have the ‘To:’ field filled in in messages app. If you do not, it sometimes lets you edit large texts in the area at top out of site. But if you’re replying to someone, as is far more usual, it won’t let you.

It would be most encouraging if Apple acknowledge these issues.

The user friendly difference between my iPhone running iOS 16 and iPhone running iOS 17 in terms of writing and editing is enormous.

I am having the same problem with my iPhone 13. It started happening recently, at the beginning of December, after a software update. (That is what I attributed that problem to, since until that software update, everything was functioning well!)

i spent a considerable amount of time in bewilderment, trying to find a way to steady the cursor in a desired place in text, and I succeeded a couple of times, but couldn’t pinpoint what I was going differently in the successful attempts.

At this point, the only way around it, is by breaking up the longer text into shorter segments within which the cursor still obeys the commands.

This is a huge issue, and I am

quite certain that it will have to be fixed! The sooner - the better!

The fact that this thread was started on October 3 and there has been no clear fix that works for everyone is ridiculous. Imagine it being 2024 and you cannot send a text without using another app to edit it?

I too, have to start a text message in notes and then copy and paste it into the text message. if I forget, I have to cut half the message paste it into notes then go back to iMessage and cut the top of the message and paste that into notes and then I can do editing. Holding the spacebar does not allow me to accurately edit. The mic button covers half of the words I’m trying to click on. The highlighter dots won’t drag any further than the original word that you highlighted.

How could you completely screw up the development of one of the best text messaging apps available? Worst, typical, Apple corporate morals, say “deny deny deny there is an issue,”.

I have an iPhone 11 same problem it’s so frustrating but I have found a way to go back & correct words hit the word u want to correct (just note) that u won’t see the cursor & u won’t even see the word anymore bc the screen moves down automatically but once u hit the word u want to correct hit the back button & it will take u back to the word & u will see where it deleted one letter of the word or it may have just combined two words bc it took the space out u may have deleted the space between two words but u can continue to delete the word & correct the spelling or if it’s a whole sentence do the same thing hit the last word of the sentence u want to correct & just backspace until it deletes all the words u need to correct I hope this helps a lot of ppl 😊
