My phone is on but the screen is black.

Follow these steps, testing after each step:

• Software Update.
• Turn iPhone on or off.
• Force Restart iPhone.

If that didn’t work, then I recommend service.

Force restart your iPhone 12 :

Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

after restarting your iPhone let us know if you see the apple logo for a moment and then the screen goes to black again.

On your iPhone press and hold the button on the right side of the phone - It will engage Siri.

Ask Siri to turn up the brightness - literally say, “Turn up the Brightness.” Even though the screen is black, a slider will appear on the screen.

Slide the slider, to the right, to turn up the brightness on the screen.

It won’t stop the issue from happening again, but it works. You won’t have to reboot your phone
