Magic keyboard will not connect to any iPad. We have used it easily in the past. Do I recharge like an iPad? And how do I know if it is recharged?

The Smart Connector is integral to the iPad and the Magic Keyboard for iPad; it is not a separate article.
The Smart Connector on the iPad is on the back of the iPad. It consists of three small contacts - that resemble small gold-coloured dots. These connect to three matching contacts on the Magic Keyboard.
If instead you have a Magic Keyboard for the Mac, this also being compatible with your iPad, this connects via Bluetooth. This keyboard does have a battery. The state of the battery charge is displayed on your iPad. Charging time is dependent upon the Power Adapter, but full charge should be achieved within (at most) a few hours.

If you have a bluetooth keyboard, the Smart Connector has no relevance.
Apple’s has somewhat confusing naming of their keyboards. The “Magic Keyboard for iPad” and the “Magic Keyboard”(unqualified - but designed for Mac) are two entirely different products. Unless properly described, on the basis of a short name alone, the two keyboards are often confused one for the other.
No time at all - simply because the Apple Magic Keyboard has no battery!
The Magic keyboard connects to (and is powered by) the iPad via the Smart Connector.
What is a smart connector? I did not receive one with my Magic Keyboard.
My Magic Keyboard is via Bluetooth and I have never connected it to anything before.
Thank you. You have been very helpful. I have never had to line up the dots before because Bluetooth connected effortlessly. I will try it.
