Airplay problem to LG CX series TV

I have an LG CX series TV with the latest OS which has Airplay 2.

I have a 2019 MBA and 2020 iMac both running Monterey 12.1 and both devices suffer exactly the same problems - which have existed in previous versions of OS. All Apple support instructions have been followed.

I can 'screen mirror' the Macs to the TV although it can be choppy.

My issue is when I try to cast my own videos from Finder using Airplay.

I can play Youtube using the Airplay button from both devices. If I use Elmidia Video Player, the homemade videos play fine (as experienced using the 5 minutes free trial before having to commit to the paid-for version - which I didn't do).

However, I cannot stream the same video files using either the Apple TV app or Quicktime. Apple TV comes up with the error message 'This video is in a format that can’t be streamed to this TV'

whereas Quicktime just hangs (but tells me that the content is playing on the TV). The format must be OK as the Elmedia Player works OK. It is obvious that the TV is receiving the Airplay signal as it goes into the initial Airplay screen - but doesn't progress any further.

Any clue why this isn't working?

First of all, thank you for actually replying - the first in a month.

A bit more info reflecting your queries-

  • iPhone to TV has exactly the same problem
  • I can happily airplay between my MBA, iMac and iPhone using the same video that doesn't work to the TV
  • I have never used antivirus or cleaner on my devices (after reading comments on these forums!)
  • The videos I am streaming are homemade using (the latest) iMovie and slideshows from Photos.
  • I have attached the screen that the TV gets stuck on - apologies for the reflections!
  • When I switch back from streaming to the TV, the TV acknowledges this and goes back to live programmes (proving that there's some form of good communication between the device(s) and the TV).
  • I have added the etrecheck info

Thanks again

I can stream to my Apple TV from my mac using Quicktime Player, Safari videos playing on youtube, the TV app.

I do not have an Airplay capable LG TV, so I can't say how that goes, except that my son has one - and does use Airplay routinely, but from his iPhone; I don't know if he has tried it with his mac.

Have you used any sort of antivirus or "cleaner" on these macs?

As a test, can you successfully Airplay from one of your macs to the other? This would help us determine if the issue is on the mac side or the TV side.

Also, Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here.

Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.

I don't see anything obviously wrong in the report.

You could try turning off the network logger software, but it is unlikely that this is the problem.

Could there be any firmware update available for your tv?

I suppose that you have checked that the devices are all indeed connected to the same wifi network.

Also: just to be sure, check the AirPlay and HomeKit settings on the tv, and see if it all looks ok.

Thanks again Luis

I don't believe Network Logger is the culprit as the problem exists on my MBA which doesn't have this software loaded and on my iPhone.

I have checked the TV which has separate versions of Software, webOS and Airplay and all seem to be up to date (I have auto update switched on) but have just sent LG an email asking them to confirm as it is not clear on the support website.

They are definitely connected to my only wifi network.

Setting for Airplay is either ON or OFF so nothing much to check there. I have tried this with Homekit enabled and removed but both with the same result - it doesn't work.

Happy to hear from others that have an LG OLED TV CX Series that have/haven't the same problem.

Cheers

Roy
