Iphone stopped charging via type C port after update

Iphone 15 Pro Max stopped charging via type C port after 18.6.1 update. Charging works via MagSafe.

I have scheduled a visit to a service centre, until then was wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar and what was the resolution.

iPhone 15 Pro Max, iOS 18

Same issue on a 16 Pro Max, upgrade started on 17/08/25 when I plugged the phone in, then the device switched off and wouldn’t respond to anything apart from a MagSafe power bank.

I managed to hard reset it after 24 hours of trying, ultimately fixed by using a MagSafe power bank and holding the power button for around 5 minutes (I set it up in a jig). USB-C still didn’t work until I restarted the device. The device has restarted randomly twice since.

Took it to Apple, completely useless as they couldn’t pull any crash logs and simply responded “well it’s working now and it passed our 2 tests”.

When I was in store, there were 3 others with the same issue on a mix of 16’s and 16 Pro’s.

My running theory is the upgrade failed due to low battery and the upgrade de-registering the USB-C port temporarily, but long enough for the software upgrade to register that the device doesn’t have enough power to continue.

Search for accessories that have completed MFi certification. Once an accessory has completed MFi certification requirements and is reported to Apple as sold/distributed, it will be searchable in our public database of authorized Lightning, headset, charging, iAP-enabled, and Find My network-enabled accessories.

Learn how to identify counterfeit or uncertified Lightning-based accessories.

Follow these steps:

  • Remove any debris from the charging port on the bottom of your device.
  • Restart your iPhone or iPod touch.
  • Try a different USB cable or charger.
  • Make sure you have the latest version of iOS.
