Microphone in FaceTime stopped working after updating to Sequoia 15.4

After updating my Macobook Pro M1 to MacOS Sequoia 15.4, the microphone on my MacBook no longer works for Facetime calls via iPhone. I can hear the other party, but they can't hear me.

The problem does not occur on my Mac Studio and Studio Display with MacOS Sequoia 15.4, everything works there.

Update: When I contacted Apple Support, I was advised to create a test user with admin rights, then log in and check whether the problem still exists. The problem does not occur with the test user. I then logged in again with the normal user and the problem reappeared.

However, I do the following:

  1. Select the Apple menu
  2. Click System Settings
  3. Click Sound in the sidebar
  4. Click Input on the right

I have seen that there are other audio drivers than the Macbook microphone and the iPhone microphone that could be the cause of the problem. I opened the directory /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/ in the Finder and deleted all subdirectories and contents. After restarting the Macbook, Facetime audio from the Macbook via the iPhone works perfectly again and the microphone in the Macbook does not cause any problems. The other party can hear me again.

I hope you can solve the problem just like I did.

I'm experiencing the same issue with FaceTime on my MacBook Pro M1. After upgrading to macOS Sequoia 15.4, the microphone stopped working specifically for FaceTime. I tested both video and audio calls — I can hear the other person, but they can't hear me.

I also tested video and audio calls using the WhatsApp app installed on the same MacBook, and both worked perfectly. The issue seems to be isolated to FaceTime’s use of the microphone.

Hi thejitenderluthra, WhatsApp could be the reason why the microphone for FaceTime doesn't work. If you uninstall WhatsApp from the Macbook M1 and delete all content in the /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/ directory, it may still not work. Then you would have to reinstall MacOS 15.4 over it. Simply shut down the Macbook, hold the power button when switching on until the start options are displayed and then reinstall 15.4 on the existing SSD. The programs and settings will all be retained. The process took me about 45 minutes (depending on the bandwidth of the internet access). Good luck with it.
