Mail not working after update iOS 18.1.1

After updating iOS to 18.1.1, the mail app is not working. It is totally malfunction and can’t receive nor send email. Start the mail app, it just pops up a white screen. I have tried to offload the app and reinstall it. It’s the same. When I hard reset the phone, it can pop up the mail account list but freezes. How do I fix it?

This has been a pain to deal with. Please fix it. I shouldn't have to re-do things because of your issues.

I have no issues. I’m just a user like you in this user-to-user forum.

if you describe YOUR issue, or just read the thread you have posted to, whatever your issue is can be resolved. But you have to tell the other users here what it is. Unless your only purpose is to rant and not actually fix whatever the problem is.

Here's what finally worked for me. So simple. Open your email. In the top right, next to a button that says

"select" there are 3 dots. Click the 3 dots and select "list view". That's it. I did it on every account. There are 3 dots in "All Inboxes" too, but I'd already done every account. Hope this does the trick for you.

I went from getting no email to getting email, but the number doesn't show at left. Then numbers showed up but they weren't remotely correct. I opened up an email account, clicked on the 3 dots at top right, selected "List View", and it works now. Simple. I hope it does the trick.

I have now updated my iphone and ipad to ios 18.3.1 but still my email doesn't work. I've removed all my email accounts except iCloud. I've sent a test email from my Mac to my iCloud account (just says "hello, how are you" -- no attachments) and it takes about 15-20 minutes before it appears on my iphone and ipad -- the little wheel just goes round and round till the email finally appears --I'm just so fed up with this. My iphone is a new one and it's now rubbish. Even iCloud mail is so slow, never mind my third party accounts (Yahoo, Microsoft).

Things I've tried: 1) removing accounts and adding them again, (2) restarting the iphone & ipad, (3) turning VPN off, (4) changing iphone mail to List View as someone here suggested. None of these makes any difference.

Question: someone suggested that Categorising is going on in the background even when you've selected List View -- does this slow things down? Even so, the Categories/List View is only available on my iphone, not the ipad. The ipad doesn't have the Categories/List View option at all, and it's still really slow.

Since the upgrade, emails missing (I use, Apple Mail app to gmail), no notifications of unread emails. Wife has lost 2years of emails in the middle of her list of emails (iCloud Mail).

Terrible upgrade and the change to the format is awful.

Bring back the old format please.

Are you using a 3rd party Mail app or account like Outlook, for example?

Or Apple could fix their mistake. It worked before the update. It didn’t work after the update. Screwing up thousands of people’s emails and blaming them or their email provider is adding insult to injury. The phones are expensive. I shouldn’t have to work my way through a laundry list of things that don’t work, and I shouldn’t need to reconfigure my phone or email providers. Apple screwed it up. They should fix it.

There is no mistake. Apple ADDED FEATURES to email, but provided a way to turn them off for users who don’t want them. What mistake are you talking about? Or didn’t you read any of this thread or the release notes: What’s new in iOS 18 - Apple Support

It’s not 3rd party email provider. All kinds of people are having the same issue regardless of their provider. I have multiple email providers, and they’re all experiencing the same issue. It But worked fine until the update.

All kinds of people always have problems, but that doesn't make it a global issue. Because all kinds of people DO NOT have a problem with mail. There are over a dozen possible reasons that one might have a problem with email.

And it matters who your email provider is; each email provider may require a different solution.

Here are the two most common reasons email isn’t working:

  • Your account isn’t logged into correctly, either because you changed your password, or your email provider requires 2 factor authentication, or they have abandoned passwords for passkeys or authenticator verification
  • You are using VPN

As it worked until the update (and which update? There have been 4 since 18.1.1; the current is 18.3) VPN is the most likely culprit. If you have a 3rd party VPN installed, even if you are not using it delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN.
