Why does Apple Pay work on my iPhone but not on my Apple Watch?

About 1/3 of the time, Apple Pay via my Watch indicates “card expired” yet using my phone with the same card the transaction goes through. I’ve removed and reinstalled the card. Didn’t help. What’s going on?

It is probably a merchant issue. Some credit card processing systems are programmed to only accept the expiration data a specific way, such as MM/YY and will not accept MM/YYYY or vice versa. Most systems accept either code. It could also be a programming error at the specific merchant that shows expired. Your issuing bank or merchant may be able to share move specifics.
