About 1/3 of the time, Apple Pay via my Watch indicates “card expired” yet using my phone with the same card the transaction goes through. I’ve removed and reinstalled the card. Didn’t help. What’s going on?

Yes, it works at 2/3rds of the merchants. It’s consistent at which merchants it fails and at which it works.
Also, when paying with my watch generates the “card expired” response I can successfully pay using my phone even though it’s Apple Pay using the same card.
It is probably a merchant issue. Some credit card processing systems are programmed to only accept the expiration data a specific way, such as MM/YY and will not accept MM/YYYY or vice versa. Most systems accept either code. It could also be a programming error at the specific merchant that shows expired. Your issuing bank or merchant may be able to share move specifics.
Maybe but I doubt it. At those merchants where the card is rejected when I use Apple Pay on my watch, I can successfully use Apple Pay with my phone. I wouldn’t think that Apple Pay sends the expiration date differently from the watch and phone. On the other hand, I’ve seen screwier things from Apple.
So, are you saying your Apple Watch works at ⅔ of the merchants you use Apple Pay?
