Can’t transfer media files

I have a 1TB thumb drive that has a USB plug on one end and lightning plug on the other end to plug into an iPhone. I was transferring my digital movies to it so I’m not taking up space on my phone or iPad. After transferring about 60gb of videos I can’t open any extra files I add. The video files keep saying that The document “movie title” could not be opened. The file isn’t compatible with QuickTime Player. The file works fine on the original location. Image files don’t always show the full image either. Any ideas? I’ve tried reformatting and running disk utility.

Weird. Works for me. Took a .heic image and a HEVC .mov with iPad Air 2022 and copied them from the camera roll straight to an APFS formatted 256 GB USB flash drive connected to the iPad's USB-C.

Deleted the files from camera roll and could playback them via the Files on the iPad from that USB flash drive. Then copied the files from the USB flash drive to a Mac mini 2018 running Sonoma and also there QuickTime Player and Preview.app showed the files OK.
