Converting DVDs to digital to play on a television

I have been converting old VHS home videos to DVD disks, and they play well on my Mac via a plug in DVD player. However, although my Samsung TV has a USB port, it won't play on the TV. I can show photos on the TV with memory stick, so thought I'd covert the DVDs to digital. The discussion on how to do so looks helpful, but it doesn't mention putting the converted video onto an external storage device. I'd welcome anyone' advice or experience please.
