As a definite “non techie” do I need the rapid security response on my personal iPhone?

Apple’s advice is to always install updates. And Rapid Security Response updates are to fix just-discovered vulnerabilities that Apple consider serious enough to not wait for the next regular update. So the short answer is “Yes”.

Rapid Security Repsonse:
Yes. It is part of most recent iOS versions. It cannot be uninstalled. So, either wait to update, or proceed with updating. It will install from here on out when you install any post-recent iOS update.
