Why is apple tv so hard to log into?

Got a new Sony tv, has the apple tv program built in but can't log into apple tv on it. Says there was a problem logging in. Account information is all correct. I use the same username and password on the website, and yet can't do it here.

All other streaming platforms have no issues. You can log in on the website, type in some activating code that's on the tv and it logs you on, but no apple has to be so difficult, why?

Why does my apple account also have to be an email address? Why can't it be a username like 99% of the world?

Verify for TV software updates. Then restart and try again.
Verify the TV time, date, and timezone, as that must be correct for secure connections.
Verify that you use a normal DNS (e.g. as provided by your ISP), so that all necessary servers can be contacted.

Else contact the Apple Support staff for further assistance. Contact Apple for support and service (phone numbers) or start your support request online (chat/email/callback).

It is unique, and you already have it. No need to search for alternatives because of ‘already taken’.
It is not a technically important distinction.
You’ll need this digital communication method anyway.
It is quite common for streaming services, and you know it. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Disney+, YouTube, etc. all want users to sign in with email.
