I have a 9th generation iPad. I have Apple TV on it. My TV is a 6 year old LG and I cannot download the Apple TV app. Instead I was hoping to mirror from my iPad to the TV but although both are on, and on the same wifi network, the mirroring does not detect the TV. I’m now assuming that the TV is just not compatible. Am I correct? Is there a workaround?

Those would be the best steps to take. It is possible that screen mirroring is not supported with that model of TV. We'd recommend checking with LG to confirm.
