HDMI is a universal standard. If your cable is HDMI and the port is HDMI, then they absolutely have to fit together.

If they don’t, either one or the other is not actually HDMI, or there’s a physical issue with either one or both.

Tell us what make and model of multiport hub you have. And provide a picture of the cable, both ends and the port to help us diagnose.

The suggested adapter will avoid using the hub and existing cable, by plugging directly into a usb-c port on the Mac and into the hdmi port of the monitor.

According to ASUS website the monitor has a display port in addition to HDMI, so you may simply be mistaking a display port cable with HDMI.

Asus – ROG Strix XG27ACG

This is a 27" monitor with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels and a maximum refresh rate of 180 Hz.

It has the following video inputs:

  • USB-C (DisplayPort Alt Mode) (can also provide a small 7.5W trickle of power to the computer)
  • DisplayPort v1.4
  • HDMI v2.0

The specifications say it supports vertical frequencies (refresh rates) of

  • 48 ~ 180 Hz (USB-C, DisplayPort)
  • 48 ~ 144 Hz (HDMI)

Your tag line indicates that you have a 13" M2 MacBook Pro. That computer has two USB-C / Thunderbolt ports, no dedicated HDMI port, and no MagSafe 3 port. If you are using that Mac with a powered hub or dock which offers a dedicated video port (HDMI or DisplayPort), you might want to use a HDMI-to-HDMI or DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable. If you are plugging the monitor directly into the Mac, a USB-C to USB-C cable rated to carry video would be more straightforward than a USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to DisplayPort adapter.

I do not believe that the specifications for your 13" M2 MacBook Pro promise support for any refresh rate in excess of 60 Hz.
