To be clear, closing the lid does not turn the MacBook Air off. It simply puts the computer to sleep.
Our friend, @MartinR, has given you the correct guidance for actually shutting the laptop down, otherwise.
Whether you turn your laptop off, ever, is entirely up to you. There is no harm in leaving it on 24/7 as long as there is adequate airflow all around the computer to allow it to keep its cool. Simply closing the lid to sleep it when you aren't using it is fine.
Having said that, it's not a bad idea to reboot the Mac once in a while. This allows the OS to clear caches and do other housekeeping chores to maintain proper performance.
> Shut Down will "turn off" your MBAir. Or you can just close the lid. Either way, it will start up automatically as soon as you lift the lid.
