There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and malware and isolate them for removal by the user.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

The more common usage in recent years reflects concern about a change or issue or error; something unexpected or unfamiliar.

Might be a new feature or other intentional change, or some Apple or app bug, some network glitch, or maybe a nascent hardware problem such as a failing display and digitizer and the ensuing missed touches and ghost touches.

Or questions about telemetry and analytics data.

Or advertisers lying in their advertising, of course. Lies work very well.

We’ll know more about this case as the OP provides some background.

Could you provide some information about what issue or concern or problem has you thinking that?

There many scam pop-ups and scam advertisements and scam notifications making false claims, for instance.

There can be other causes or issues, and sometimes the things Apple has done in Tahoe are just, well, unexpected.
