I just bought a new MacMini. I haven't even plugged it in yet. I would like to put my photo and music libraries on an external hard drive as those libraries are way too big for the built in memory on the mini. I do NOT want to subscribe to apple cloud services, at least not yet.
What are the set up steps to use when transferring my data from my Time Machine back up to the new mini and to the external HD?

Migrating your User Account from the Time Machine backup to the new Mac mini is all or nothing.
Transfer to a new Mac with Migration Assistant - Apple Support
Best bet, is to return that Mac mini and purchase one with the same or more storage space as your old Mac.
If that is not possible, move your Photos, Music and Movie Libraries from the old Mac to the external drive.

Change where your music files are stored on Mac - Apple Support
Move your iMovie for Mac library - Apple Support
Then remove the Photos, Music and Movie Libraries from the old Mac and migrate to the new Mac mini.

Return the MM and get one with the same or more storage as your old Mac. We get posts like yours daily and they almost always do NOT end well for those that ignore the advice. Yes we know it’s more $ but do you want a good user experience or not, yup it’s that simple.
Thanks for your help all. I've abandoned the MM as a replacement. Also not buying a bigger one. My network and needs are a bit convoluted and am going a different direction for the time being.
