Crackling Noise in AirPods Max Only When Using Mac

I've been using a pair of AirPods Max for a year with no issue. However, in the last month, the speakers have begun producing a loud crackling/popping/static noise about every 15 seconds.

This noise only happens when I am listening to audio from my Mac; it does not occur when listening to audio from my iPhone, iPad, Nintendo Switch, or any other device. It also happens on every listening mode. I've noticed it both in busy settings and when alone, so not thinking it's an interference issue?

I recently updated my Mac to Tahoe 26.1 in hopes of fixing the issue, but no luck. I've also reset my AirPods Max several times, also with no luck fixing the issue.

Any help is much appreciated, and I am more than happy to provide some more details! Thanks!

Am no expert i this area, yet your request to the community deserves some response.

Apple support's online articles have some tips that may be helpful in achieving clearer audio quality on Mac:

Eg: You may want to try the test steps listed within the article below, to Improve your Bluetooth connection.

Eg says: "Your headphones communicate using Bluetooth, and a Bluetooth signal can be interfered with or weakened in some situations".

Another article: If sound quality is reduced when using Bluetooth headphones with your Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says: ✽ "Quit apps that use the microphone

  • Quit any apps that use the microphone of your Bluetooth headphones, such as video conferencing or chat apps.
  • Make sure that System Settings (or System Preferences) isn't open and showing your Sound settings."

_______________________

✽ "Reselect your headphones :If audio quality is still reduced, try selecting your Bluetooth headphones again:

  1. Click Control Center in the menu bar, then click Sound.
  2. Select your device's internal speakers, such as MacBook Pro Speakers.
  3. Reselect your Bluetooth headphones."

✽ how Bluetooth headphones connect

"If you listen to music or other audio with Bluetooth headphones and then open an app that uses the Bluetooth headphones' microphone, audio quality and volume are reduced.

You might also hear static or popping sounds. This happens because Bluetooth has two modes:

  • The first mode is for listening to higher-quality audio.
  • The second mode is for both speaking through the microphone and listening to audio. When Bluetooth switches to the second mode, audio quality is reduced until the microphone is no longer in use."
