Why does iCloud email take minutes, sometimes hours to refresh?

Since switching from Gmail to iCloud, I've notice that there is no easy refresh button on the mail app on Mac, and I rarely receive immediately shy emails. There's constantly a delay of minutes, to hours unless I manually refresh it myself, and there is no easy refresh button in the app either. on my iPhone I can at least refresh by pulling the screen down, but even there unless I open the app, my emails always show up in lumps at certain times rather than immediately. I've tried fixing this in settings but can't get it to work.

iPhone 13, iOS 18

There are so many possible reasons it is not easy to guess which one, with just the info. in your post to us.

Eg: * A wi-fi / network cause /

  • interference from VPN or third-party apps (like unneccesary virus checkers ad-blockers, cleaners etc)
  • Any third-party apps found necessary need to be kept up-to-date for compatibility..
  • Mail settings, accounts, or set-up incomplete /
  • Mac OS & iOS versions may need updating (eg: updates include bug-fixes, increased security) /

(About iOS 18 Updates - Apple Support says iOS 18.7.2 recommended for all users)

  • not enough memory / storage space on devices (or iCloud) for smooth operation /

((A Mac needs around 50Gb free, an iPhone needs around 8 Gb free)

  • etc. etc.
  • Would also be helpful to know which Mac model (Year) and MacOS version is installed

You may be able to eliminate some of these possible causes from you own know-how of your Mac, to make the solution more apparent to us all. We can likely provide more detail on any that you may want to look into.
