If you follow the instructions in the link Bob provided, those steps (either signing out of iCloud on the device, or Erase All Content and Settings) will disable Find My.
Thanks, Steve. I did that and I think it's working. I logged into the Find My app on another MacBook Pro and was able to remove the M1 MacBook.
