She has more than 100,000 emails in the Hotmail account, and I worry that this is causing the problems she is having with Hotmail throwing off Microsoft error messages and not allowing her to log in. Will this volume of mail also cause problems in Mail? I have held off trying to move her from Hotmail to Mail until I get more information on this question. Thank you for any help you can give.

Go to Accounts.
At the bottom Right Click on Add Account
On the next Screen, Use the choose from list
Choose Microsoft Exchange
Enter the name of your wife as it would be when she set it up. Also enter the email address
Sign In
You have to Verify the Account
Use her Password for Hotmail
If all works out you should see a screen like this appear
What I left on mine. Yours might differ
The email will show up across from Email Address
Exchange will show up across from Description (Change it to Hotmail from Exchange)
Her Name will show up across from Name
Downloading 100,000 email will take quite awhile and depending on attachments take up a lot of room on your computer.
You could opt to use the Outlook.app on the App Store (free) for her Hotmail if you don't mid using two Mail apps.
She is using the Outlook app with Hotmail and has been for 20 years or more. Recently, however, it has been causing a lot of problems with her not being able to sign on. Sometimes it is a security issue meaning we have to reboot our router. Other times it is not recognizing her password and she has to go through Microsoft to get them to send a code to unlock things. It has gotten such that it is happening every day. Thus, the considered move to Apple Mail.
Thanks for the reply; I have followed the steps carefully and they represent exactly what I saw, BUT still I can't send mail from my hotmail account. The screenshot below shows what happens and informs it's an authentication issue with the SMTP server. Can someone, please help me understand how I should authenticate to this server? Many thanks!
