Unread message notifications on iMac Messages app

I diligently read my text messages either on my phone or my Mac. But when I open Messages on my Mac, I am notified of an allegedly unread message. Whazzat? This message number 627287 doesn't obviously point to any message I've gotten, so I don't have a clue what message is being referenced. I see these messages ALL THE TIME. I'm sometimes informed that there are several messages unread. What's up?

For me, this usually happens when my phone auto-filters spam messages. They're automatically hidden without technically being 'read' (which I appreciate), but Messages on my computer will keep them as unread entries when I open the app next.

As for the unknown number not appearing in conversations, I'd check your recently deleted in case the popup's counting those messages too. Open Messages, then click View > Recently Deleted in the top menu bar.

Ah, thanks. That's exactly right. It's deleted spam, and the 62787 was the latest of those. Now, I deleted ALL "recently deleted", including the 62787 one, but the "1 unread" still appears as shown in my picture. When does that go away?

I'd fully close Messages (⌘ + Q), then restart the computer- that should update the menu.
