Unable to remove gridlines in Pages 13.1 tables on Mac

In Pages 13.1 I have a document with multiple tables. For some reason in many of the tables I can't remove the gridlines. I have the table selected and toggle the gridlines buttons to off but as shown in the attached screenshot the gridlines remain. If I select individual cells the border is also set to no border. Can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks for your reply. The shapes around the letters are just that. They are shapes and are not the issue.

I have done exactly as you describe, set Table outline selector to None, and on Cell tab's set Border Styles to No Border. But the borders still persist.

I have multiple copies of the same table, copy and pasted in the document. Some allow me to remove the gridlines. Others don't.

I just tried an experiment and copied one of the problematic tables into a new blank document. When it pasted the table the gridlines were no longer there as per the settings.

Pages lacks the inherent capability to provide rounded race tracks surrounding letter selections as you have shown. It can be done with an externally created rounded rectangle as an SVG as I was able to do here and place on a layer over a table column of values. That SVG can be duplicated, scaled, and rotated as preferred.

In order to remove the gridlines in your table, you will need to select only the table itself, and then first on its Table tab, set Table Outline selector to None. Then, on its Cell tab's Border, you press the cmd-key to select multiple items and then set Border Styles to No Border. That should entirely hide the table grid lines (as I did above).
