MacBook Pro Crashing (Safari - Unraid)

This issues started occurring today, was working fine prior and for a little while this morning. I was able to replicate the issue by retracing my steps and can confirm every time I navigate to my Unraid server via Safari memory usage appears to skyrocket in an odd pattern the first time it happened I was able to see the memory graph spike, plateau for a few moments then back to normal and repeat over and over til it crashed. After this first time the crash happens too fast to see if the memory graph is repeating the same pattern. Edit: Attempted to use Firefox and the issue did not present itself again. This leads me to believe it is a Safari issue.

You appear to have installed not ONE useless VPN, but portions of TWO different one.

NordVPN is not the right version for your Mac, as it is clearly NOT signed with. developer certificate.

TwinGate is not working properly, as it is missing components.

Unsigned Files:

  Apps: 1

System Extensions:

  [Not Loaded] NordVPN Threat Protection Pro™ - version 9.4.1 (Nordvpn S.A. - installed 2025-09-18)

    Application: /Applications/NordVPN.app - version 9.4.1 (Nordvpn S.A. - installed 2025-09-18)

    Description: System extension is used to scan files downloaded from the internet for malware.

  [Running] Twingate - version 2025.227 (Twingate Inc. - installed 2025-08-15)

    Application: /Applications/Twingate.app - version 2025.227 (Twingate Inc. - installed 2025-09-07)

    Description: Twingate requires a Network Extension to route your traffic through Twingate.

RE VPN:

A virtual private network, or VPN, is a private connection over the Internet from a device to a specific network.  VPN technology is widely used in corporate environments. If you need to be "present" on an institutional network, a VPN is a great tool for accomplishing this. It is generally issued and controlled by the institution.

Almost all other uses are a SCAM. There is generally no need for you to have a private (and almost always MUCH slower) connection to a VPN vendor's Network, except to make it easier for them to harvest your data to sell. If you are behind a Router you control or Trust, there is NO security advantage whatsoever in using a VPN. Your connections are already encrypted in most cases.

If VPN vendors just stopped there, it would be bad. But many of these packages also insist on scanning all your files, non-stop, -- nominally looking for viruses, but who knows for sure what data they are harvesting. Their non-stop file reading punishes your computer's performance in the process.

Some also break into your other secure connections so they can be FIRST to examine your data, often leaving your Mac MORE vulnerable to attack.

summary: remove all traces of those VPNs and live happiliy ever after.

"panicString" : "panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffe0043271874): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from WindowServer (2 induced crashes) in 120 seconds

WindowServer is the task that performs imaging for the screen for the Mac. It is unrelated to Microsoft Windows.

You appear to have done something that caused MacOS to get lost, or precluded its eventual periodic servicing of WindowServer for an astonishing 120 seconds. The watchdog timer that protects against such issues has fired. This is indeed a serious issue.

A few thoughts - ignoring the question of whether anyone ever "needs" a non-corporate VPN, NordVPN isn't a bad choice per se, but:

  1. Even with a valid VPN use-case like avoiding geo-restrictions, you don't need the malware scanner;
  2. The NordVPN security service and the Twingate zero-trust service are probably interfering with each other;
  3. What happens if you navigate to your Unraid server with a different browser, not Safari (3a - do NordVPN or Twingate install Safari extensions or similar plugin services)?
  4. Are you using Twingate to log into some "rolled your own" zero-trust service you installed on your Unraid server like a ZScaler container? If so, are you sure it's properly configured?
  5. Is SMB properly configured on your Unraid server?

Most likely issue is that something is in conflict with proper SMB connectivity to the Unraid server - but only you have enough knowledge about what is installed on your computer and server and how the applications are configured.
