Cannot move photos from external hard drive to new location on MacBook Pro

I am trying to move some photos from an external hard drive to a new location via my MBP. However, as the screenshot below shows, I seem limited to "Read only" inspire of the selection at the bottom of the 'Get Info' screen. What am I missing.

(This all stems from an earlier post where I was trying to resolve the apparent locking of my photos on the external hard drive in question; I have since concluded the ext HDs are likely to be suspect now so needing to copy the content and replace with new ones.)

Some linked Reference to "from an earlier post" may help shed some light here.

Is there an associated issue with read only on your photo image? Maybe I am missing something...

How is this external drive formatted you do not say...(?)

You can read NTFS natively but not write

If NTFS it requires 3rd party software to be able to r/w however — update the 3rd party software if this is issue,

if missing or out of date.

Drag and drop should not be an issue.

After a period of normal operation I suddenly had a problem trying to edit the content of one external drive (A); clicking and holding on a folder title would not turn it light blue so I couldn’t continue editing the titles of individual photos.

A second ext HD(B) would no longer connect at all to my MBP.

Furthermore, on (A) I had been having issues with moving items within folders to other folders and finally I could not eject the disc as it was “being used” and it was not apparent where or how!) Force Quit had no effect either!!

Strangely the disk(A) was not showing up on Disk Utility. However, while A was appearing on my desktop I was able to open it to see the content - but, as I’ve said, I could not edit any of its file/folder titles.

I hadn’t tried the storage sticks initially as I wanted to leave things as they were while waiting for the Forum discussions guidance.

However, the need to access some info eventually prompted me to manually disconnect both A & B and

So, by trying external storage sticks ( which showed up immediately on connection), it confirmed the external HDs (A&B) with which I was having problems were obviously likely to be dodgy so:

a. I ditched the one (B) I could not open at all and…..

b. I managed to salvage content of (A) while I could see it occasionally!

Having backed up the files from A to an external stick, I can now edit titles etc with no problem.

👍👍

PS Both A & B are now resident, in pieces, in the household trash!!
