Mac Mini M2 3440 x 1440 monitor works (HDMI) using Better Display, but black screen without.

I inherited a Mac Mini M2 when my wife went back to a Windows PC. I hooked it up and tried to get my 3440 x 1440 display up and running (HDMI out through an Anker HDMI switch). Black screen.

Upon connecting a 1920 x 1080 monitor I was able to install the Better Display app. With that app running, I disconnected from the 1920 x 1080 monitor and connected again to the 3440 x 1440 monitor. It detected the video resolution correctly and displayed beautifully. Everything working. I set it to start automatically at login.

Unfortunately, the app does not wake until after login when the computer sleeps. Thus, I have no signal to the display upon trying to wake the computer.

I'm left with a conundrum. I can run on my monitor, but not until Better Display is running. Unfortunately, I have no means of logging in, because I have a black screen.

Ideas?

Thanks for your consideration.

Test a short 8K HDMI 2.1 48Gbps ultra high speed cable connected directly to the Mac mini.

(no Anker switch and no Better Display app)
