Finder doesn't open/crashes after update to Tahoe

After update of my Mac Pro M1 to Tahoe Finder stopped working. Most of the time it doesn't show any errors, just doesn't open. Sometimes I get a modal "The last time you opened Finder, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?" but neither selecting "Reopen" or "Don't Reopen" helps, Finder crashes after either.


Crash logs in Console show the below for Finder:

Exception Type:    EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)
Exception Codes:   0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000

Termination Reason:  Namespace LIBSYSTEM, Code 2, Application Triggered Fault


Application Specific Information:
assertion failure: NSImage requested a variant from a symbol that wasn't found in the asset catalog. Symbol Name: %@. Variant details: <Scale Factor: %.2f> <Idiom: %ld> <Layout Direction: %ld> <Size: %ld> <Weight: %ld> <Point Size: %.2f>, <Appearance: %@>.


So far I tried all suggestions I I could find:

  1. Rebooting to Safe mode
  2. Uninstalling any virtual drive software (Dropbox, Google Drive, Egnyte)
  3. Cleaning spotlight index
  4. Deleting Finder config file
  5. Wiping dyld cache
  6. Reinstalling MacOS Tahoe through recovery
  7. Disabling/enabling iCloud sync


Nothing worked.


Obviously the worst part is that with Finder not working there is no way to work with files on my laptop at all, not even install an alternative file manager not even open files via terminal. What do I do now?

In my case after much much time involved issue was related with 3rd Party app S3 Pro:


Fix:


# 1. Remove the application

rm -rf "/Applications/S3 Pro.app"


# 2. Remove application support files

rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/S3Pro

rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/FileProvider/com.expandrive.s3pro.S3ProFileProvider


# 3. Remove crash reports

rm ~/Library/Application\ Support/CrashReporter/S3\ Pro_*.plist


# 4. Verify extension is disabled

pluginkit -m | grep -i s3
