Apple Pencil Gen 1 too small for USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter

I am using the new iPad 11-inch A16. The only way to pair the Gen 1 Apple Pencil with it is to do it with the USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter. The pencil is a 2023 model and has never been used or paired before. Unfortunately, the Apple Pencil male port is too small for the adapter's female port. What do I do now?

And yes, I AM using the right adapter.

I included an image of the female lightning port of the adapter and an image of the pencil's male port.

Turn the adapter around and use the port on the other side.

The adapter has a USB-C side and a lightning side. The Lightning side will be smaller than the USB-C side.

Only one side can be used with the pencil.

Make sure you are plugging the pencil in the correct side.
