I want to backup my photos on my PC the old fashioned way. The problem is that when I connect my phone to my PC it only shows my photos up to May and it is currently September. The photos are in fact in the photos app on my phone. I don't understand why they don't appear on my laptop.
I'm not paying for iCloud and not planning to.

Antonia, one more thing - could it be that you have enabled iCloud Photos on your iPhone? If iCloud Photos is enabled, your PC may not be able to see all photos, because it can download only the items that are stored locally on the iPhone in full resolution. You cannot access the photos that are only in iCloud when downloading from the iPhone. if you are using iCloud on the iPhone, you should download the photos directly from iCloud, not from the iPhone, or you will besting only random selection.

As léonie says, having "Optimize" enabled on your phone may keep you from downloading all your pictures. In that case you have to go to iCloud.com to do the downloading.
If that's not it, then another possibility is that the software may be limited to 1000 at a time, perhaps to keep people from tying up servers. iiCloud.com uses a 1000 picture limit, for example. Try doing a different thousand each time…

OK the instructions suggest that I need to install apple devices app and then import photos from the Photos app on PC but it only retrieves about 1000 photos out of about 10k photos :(
