How come I can’t get backround to change on iMessages running ios 26 on iPad Pro 4th gen

I updated to IOS 26 today and I cannot get the backround to change in IMessages on known Apple accounts. I have googled and followed the directions and it still is not working. I have turned ipad off and back on, I have tried using airplane mode on and off and nothing works. What am I missing?

i restarted my phone two times, then i went to my messages settings went to “conversation backgrounds” turned it off and on twice and they popped up on my groupchat!
