Best Dock/Adapter for MacBook Air M4 (Sequoia 15.6.1) to use dual monitors 4K 60Hz.

I have been searching all over the web to find a docking station/adapter to support my MacBook Air M4 with two external monitors (4K 60 Hz), bearing in mind that this MacBook only has 2 USB C Thunderbolt ports.

There are "zillions" of products out there but none seem to be totally compatible.

I would welcome any advice or comments to narrow down my search.

Thank you in anticipation.

Macs which support multiple external monitors only support driving

  • One monitor using a "plain" USB-C dock or adapter, or
  • Two monitors using a Thunderbolt one

Three vendors who have been selling Thunderbolt gear to Mac users for a long time are Other World Computing, SonnetTech, and CalDigit. I'd suggest that you look at their Thunderbolt hub, dock, and dual-display adapters.

Avoid any DisplayLink-based products that you might see, as those rely upon a workaround. Your Mac has native hardware support for two external displays, so there is no reason to put up with the compromises associated with such workarounds.

The key is to get a dock that natively supports Mac display output. Expect to spend >$150 and stick to brands such as OWC, Brydge/Stone Pro, Sonnet, and a few others.

In general, the <$100 docks that seem to allow two displays in extended mode will only support that on Windows (because they use MST but Macs don't support that), and on a Mac they support multiple displays ONLY in mirrored mode.
