every school year i put my class schedule in my calendar on my macbook and it appears on my phone. This year it does not
and i have no idea why - it is the same icloud account, same calendar accounts, nothing has changed since last year except for operating systems. both of mine are up to date.

There is an "!" icon next to Calendars (bottom center of the screen). Tap Calendars to see what the error is and make sure the class schedule calendars are turned on.
Could you post a screenshot of the calendar list on your Mac and another for the calendar list on your iPhone? I suspect that the subscribed calendars on your iPhone are not turned on.
that was because i had changed the password for one of my accounts - but the items i am looking at are from another account without the alert.
