When receiving or sending photos to a family-group, the photos show up as a black square. This is not an issue with a single person. I have installed the newest security update to Mac, Ventura 13.7.8.

Do the photos transfer appropriately to others using Apple Messages? If so, check with Meta Facebook Messenger support.
Same problem for me. I mentionned the problem to Messenger, without any answer. Deinstalled and reinstalled Messenger numerous time. The problem is solved for ... two or three uses. Very frustrating.
Anybody from Apple that could help us???
