wrong phone number for two factor authentication

Tried to add credit card to wallet. Two factor authentication is using old unserviceable tele number for text verification. My iPhone Account has correct number, but two factor authentication using old. How to correct this?

Which two factor authentication are your referring too. Your Apple Account has two factor authentication and the Trusted Phone Numbers can be changed by going to Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Two-Factor Authentication. While 2FA must be turned on, I never received any verification code from my Apple Account when adding a card.

Your bank may also use two factor authentication for verification before you are allowed to add their card to your Wallet and the number they use would be one that is on that account.

It is recommended to contact your financial institution if you cannot add a card, and they may be able to clear that up for you. From experience, tier 1 bank support is not likely to know what you are talking about and it may be necessary to escalate up the chain.

The 2FA request is from your bank. Apple is not involved with 2FA authorization in regard to adding a card. The bank is using information they have on file for you.

Apple points specifically states this in the support article I linked to below.

Adding additional verification

A card issuer can decide whether a credit or debit card requires additional verification. Depending on what’s offered by the card issuer, the user may be able to choose between different options for additional verification, such as a text message, email, customer service call or a method in an approved third-party app to complete the verification. For text messages or email, the user selects from contact information the issuer has on file.”

“A code is sent, which must be entered into Apple Wallet, Settings or the Apple Watch

app. For customer service or verification using an app, the issuer performs their own communication process.”
