iPhone 16e freezes when using rear camera in slow motion

Since I have updated my iPhone 16e to IOS 18.4 I am having issues with my camera app.

When I select Slow Motion my camera freezes.

This only seems to happen when I use the back camera. The front facing camera does not freeze in Slow Motion.

Basically I cannot use the slow motion feature any more.

I tried to use it as is but when I hit the record button it will stop right away with recording anything.

Another issue I am facing is that the camera will sometimes just display a black screen in the default Photo setting.

I believe it’s fairly easy to reproduce it as long as you use 240 fps. The view finder simply freezes.

Mode: SLO-MO

Format: HD 240

Rear camera

Plenty of internal storage: 100+GB available (256GB model)

Recording internally

iOS 18.4.1

The problem goes away if I switch to 120 fps.

I noticed it predominantly happens when fps on 240 and not 120. Front camera is native to 120 so that could explain why it happens to rear only. So until further notice I cant do Slowmo on 240, I just tried now again and it still freezes up completely.

Although this is an Apple related forum on the actual Apple platform for Apple users, I’m getting the idea no Apple developer is active on all the threads. I’ve tested multiple formats with storage availabilities and different settings. In makes no difference at all, for now Slow Motion recording on 240fps is unavailable for the newly launched iPhone 16e ☠️

You may have a different cause. Yes, similar symptoms, but different causes. You should have Apple perform diagnostics on your iPhone. It can be done in person at an Apple Retail Store or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. You can also contact Apple Support and request remote diagnostics.

I stand corrected, after the latest update to 18.5 of 1.14GB I did a quick test and it seemed to be resolved. Since then I noticed some users confirmed it being unresolved. I went and retested to notice it just stops and cancels the recording after 5 seconds where previously it failed to start at all and froze completely for almost a minute.

@Jeff Donald

Noted and appreciated, point is this phone has just been released so the format storage availability and recording has nothing to do with the issue. Fact, everything worked fine prior to the previous major update and now its not, common sense is that the update caused this and Apple needs to fix it.
