New MacBook Air won't sync photos from iCloud

I love my new MacBook Air after finaklly moving away from Windows but am really frustrated as I cannot get photos to sync from iCloud:

  1. iCloud is on for everything I want EXCEPT photos. I will not allow me to toggle the button on for "sync this mac"
  2. When I open Photos there are no photos and am greeted with "The library “Photos Library.photoslibrary” could not be recognised."

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 15.3

Do you think that you should have pictures in your Photos Library? Or has it never been used?

On a Mac there can be several Libraries, but only the "System Library" can connect to iCloud. So first, see what Libraries Photos thinks are available. Be sure Photos is closed, then option-click on the Photos icon to bring up the Library Chooser dialog:

You'll see listed each of your Libraries, the path to each, and an indication of which one is the System Library.

Normally, the Photos Libraries are in your Pictures folder. (A Photos Library cannot work if it's in iCloud Drive.) If you look in your Pictures folder, and you have more than one Library, then you may be able to see which is largest.
