Recording voice using a Mac mini, is this possible? OS Sonoma 14.7

Does Sonoma OS have dictation ability?

Is there a voice to text option?

I also have an iPad if that provides better connectivity.

Mac mini, macOS 14.7

Yes, you can do dictation on a Mac mini ... but you need an external microphone to do it ... a USB mic unless you want to invest in a more complex setup that would include an analog mic + audio interface. It depends on your needs.

USB mics range from cheap to expensive. Some good choices include the Audio Technica ATR2500, Logitech Snowball, Logitech Blue Yeti, Samson Q2U ... there are lots more.

There are also USB headsets with built-in mics that may be more useful for dictation.

Old Toad how do you do it, staying up to date with all versions etc. since the first little Apple seed. Thanks for the help that you have provided to so many over the years and likely many more in the future.

MartinR provided some advice that I will explore. Regrettably I don't have a smart phone and money is very very tight. May you get your rewards in this life as who knows what the next will be like!

No. You'd better using a dedicated audio recorder instead.

The OP wants to record voiceovers for slideshows/movies. He/she needs a mic connected to the Mac to do that; a separate "dedicated" audio recorder will not be suitable for doing voiceovers.
