How can I make iPod Classic 2.0.5 compatible with car USB ports

My Ipod Classics are not compatible in any of my cars when I plug it into the USB. I am running OS 2.0.5. What can I do, if anything, to make these work in my cars.

I had a car which occasionally showed the USB device not supported message, but if I started the iPod playing and then connected it to the car, the music would play through the car, regardless of the not supported message. What I could not do was control the iPod from the car's controls and there's probably no way around that*.

If the above suggestion does not work, then if the car has an AUX socket, you could plug the iPod into that byu using a headphone to AUX socket lead (a 3.5 to 3.5mm lead). In this configuration, the volume control on the iPod will also affect how loud the music is through the car's system.

* By the way, if I remember correctly, the operating system on the iPod (2.0.5) is up to date. There will not be any updates for it (and even if I'm mistaken, any update will not change the situation you face).

If neither of the above solutions works, I think you may simply be out of luck as the Classic is very old compared to the cars.

Why, what happens when you plug the iPod into the car's USB socket?

If your cars have USB sockets, that suggests that the iPod should work. However, you will need to select the USB input on the car's controls. Also, the amount of control possible from the car's dashboard to the iPod may be very limited. My iPod Classic (now no longer working) sometimes required me to start the iPod playing before connecting it to the car.

Alternatively, if your car has a 3.5mm socket, you could connect the iPod from its headphone socket to the car's 3.5mm input (the AUX input) using a 3.5 to 3.5 mm cable and then select the AUX input on the car's controls. With this arrangement, the amount of control from the car's controls to the iPod is further limited. All control will be from the iPod and note that the volume control on the iPod will affect how loud it plays through the car (in addition to the volume control on the car).

The message I get from all my cars is the same 'USB device not supported'. Started playing music before I plugged them in as suggested. I have tried with three different iPod Classic devices in three different vehicles; a 2025 Mercedes E450, a 2022 Mercedes GLE 450, and a 2019 McLaren 720s. However, they all work with my 2006 Ferrari F430, 2001 BMW M3, and my 1999 Ferrari 550.
