MacBook Pro random shutdowns with error "kernel: (Sandbox) Sandbox: softwareupdated(97) deny(1) nvram-get aapl,panic-info"

MacBook Pro 13" 2016 - Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports

macOS Monterey

MacBook Pro randomly shuts down and the error in the log file always contains this message

kernel: (Sandbox) Sandbox: softwareupdated(97) deny(1) nvram-get aapl,panic-info

MacBook Pro seems to be able to avoid random shutdowns when disconnected from network or when running is Safe Boot mode.

This implies you most likely have an issue with third party software that is installed. Run the third party app EtreCheck and post the complete report here so we can examine it for clues.

Thanks for your reply, HWTech,

At the time you wrote your reply, I had only just wiped Macintosh SSD and reinstalled Monterey. There were no third-party applications installed. The first app I installed was EtreCheck.

EtreCheck complained about the number of kernel panics. The kernel panics always produce the following text in the report:

panic(cpu 3 caller 0xffffff8014abb6d9): "platform sandbox invalid (out-of-range address)"@evaluate.c:72

At present, there is one thing I can do to reliably cause a kernel panic and that is to reset NVRAM. Immediately after resetting NVRAM, the MacBook Pro will fail on its first attempt boot-up [it will shutdown due to kernel panic], then successfully complete boot-up on the second attempt.

Maybe there's a hardware fault in NVRAM

Thanks for confirming. You have proven there is a hardware issue of some sort. If you had no external devices connected, then the hardware fault must be with the Mac itself which means the computer will need to be repaired.

The best way to convince Apple of a hardware fault is by showing Apple the Kernel Panics occur with a clean install of macOS without any third party applications being installed.

Personally I would not spend any money on repairs for any 2016-2020 Intel Mac with USB-C ports for multiple reasons. The money spent on repairs is better put towards a new laptop. The M-series Macs are such an improvement over the 2016-2020 Intel Macs with USB-C ports and M-series Macs are the future for Apple. Besides I think the 2016 model is now considered "Obsolete" by Apple so Apple will no longer repair it which makes your decision so much easier.
